COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team could not keep pace with a persistent Metro State University Denver offense as they fall to the Roadrunners 25-6 in a Friday afternoon matchup.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: UCCS 6, MSUD 25
Records: UCCS (8-15, 4-5 RMAC), MSUD (17-10, 8-5 RMAC)
Facility: Mountain Lion Park | Colorado Springs, Colo.
All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions fall to 8-12 in the history of the matchup against the MSUD Roadrunners.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both squads got traffic on the basepaths early in the game this afternoon, but no runners would cross home plate with the Mountain Lions and Roadrunners held at a scoreless tie through the first inning.
- The Roadrunners would not be held to nothing for long as they exploded for eight runs in the second inning.
- Down big in the early innings, Aaron Faragallah hit a high fly ball that had plenty of carry to get out over the wall in left-center to put the Mountain Lions on the board. After a couple of base hits and a Walker Rumsey stolen base, Kiichi Sato took one to the opposite field for a two-run single to bring the score to an 8-3 MSUD lead.
- The Mountain Lions would add another run in the bottom of the third with Faragallah driving one to the right-center gap for a stand-up double. An errant throw from the second baseman went to the backstop and allowed Caleb Stubbings to score on the play bringing the Mountain Lion run total to four.
- The offense for MSUD would continue to plate runs throughout the game in large volumes creating a lot of distance between themselves and the Mountain Lions.
- In the bottom of the sixth inning, Nate Heflebower found his way on base with a double to right field. He came around to score shortly after with Sato lacing one to right field for a double of his own to drive in the Mountain Lion's fifth run of the game.
- The following two innings would see more lopsided results with MSUD finding the gaps and driving balls out of the ballpark to further extend their lead while keeping UCCS off the scoreboard.
- In their final turn at bat, the Mountain Lions would score one more run off the bat of Macully Sehr that scored Dylan Morace. Not much more would come of the rally as the Roadrunners were able to record the final out of the game on a 1-2-3 double play with MSUD coming out on top 25-6.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- Nate Heflebower had a good day at the plate this afternoon as he went 3-for-4 and added a double to his line.
- Aaron Faragallah and Kiichi Sato were the only other Mountain Lions with multi-hit games. Faragallah's second inning homerun was the only long ball for UCCS.
- In only one inning of work, Joseph Harris worked well against the MSUD batters as he only allowed one hit and recorded two punchouts in his outing.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- With two today, Kiichi Sato notches his 11th multi-hit game of the season, increasing his batting average to .393, the best on the team.
- Walker Rumsey is now a perfect 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts this season with his swipe of second base in the second inning.
- With 25 runs scored, the Roadrunners record a season high for a single game. The number also marks the fifth time an RMAC team has posted 20 or more runs in a game this year.
UP NEXT
- The Mountain Lions return to Mountain Lion Park tomorrow, March 26th, with another matchup against MSUD. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
