Mountain Lions Drop High Scoring Contest 23-17 to UMary

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. –  In a high-scoring affair, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team is outpaced by the University of Mary Marauders as they fall 23-17 in the highest scoring game in UCCS program history.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: UCCS 23, UMary 17
Records: UCCS (4-9, 0-0 RMAC), UMary (5-3, 0-0 NSIC)
Facility: Mountain Lion Park | Colorado Springs, Colo.
All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions remain winless against the UMary Marauders as they fall to 0-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • To start the fourth game played in three days for the Mountain Lions, they got behind early as a double roped down the left field line created early trouble for John Hoffman on the bump. After two more extra base hits and a run crossing on a bases loaded walk, Hoffman escaped a bases loaded jam by striking out the eight and nine hitters to take the Mountain Lions into the bottom of the first down 3-0.
  • During their turn at the plate, the Mountain Lions drew two walks to open the inning who both advanced one base on a wild pitch during Brad Madison's at bat. Madison drove in Kiichi Sato on a groundout to the second baseman to give the Mountain Lions their first run of the game.
  • The UMary lead would not last much longer as Aaron Faragallah launched a no-doubt homerun to left center to tie the game at three apiece. Caleb Stubbings then stepped into the box and despite getting behind in an 0-2 count, Stubbings followed up Faragallah with a solo bomb to give the Mountain Lions the 4-3 lead.
  • The first inning rally wouldn't stop there as Brad Madison lined one to the left field wall and came around to score off the bat of Matt Johnson. The Mountain Lions would end the inning with five runs scored as they batted around in the order.
  • The Mountain Lions picked up right where they left off from the first inning by plating four more runs in the second inning which was kicked off by Sato scoring on a sacrifice fly by Kit Wigington and was capped by another round of back-to-back homeruns, this time from Stubbings and Brad Madison, to take a 9-3 lead.
  • An inning later, Wigington smashed another one over the fence in left center for a two-run homer putting the Mountain Lions up 12-3.
  • UMary started to chip away at the deficit by putting up three runs in the top of the fourth, but Hoffman was able to retire the last batter he would face in the game with a fly out to left, keeping the six-run lead for the Mountain Lions.
  • In the bottom of the fourth frame, the UCCS bats fought back and won the inning after a four spot gave them a 16-6 lead with the Mountain Lions looking to their bullpen to secure the win.
  • Things started to take a turn in the game in the top of the fifth as the Marauders slowly chipped away at the Mountain Lion lead as they scored two in the fifth, three in the sixth, and then exploded in the seventh for eight runs. The big seventh inning was capped off by a three-run homerun by the pinch-hitting UMary catcher, who entered the game earlier in the inning, and took the lead 19-17, their first lead since the opening frame.
  • With all the momentum on the visiting side, the Marauders continued to add on in the eighth and ninth innings by plating their 23rd run on another three-run homerun.
  • All the Mountain Lions could muster on offense in their final turn at bat was a free base on a hit batter, and the game concluded with a 23-17 UMary win.

STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Kit Wigington hit the ball well when he needed to, as he drove in seven runs in five plate appearances, collecting three hits, one being via the long ball.
  • The Mountain Lions combined for five homeruns today coming off the bats of WIgington, Aaron Faragallah, Brad Madison and Caleb Stubbings who sent two over the wall in the game.
  • There were plenty of Mountain Lions who were seeing the ball well this afternoon, as six UCCS batters registered multi-hit games.
  • Kiichi Sato reached base six times in five plate appearances with two hits and three walks.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Forty combined runs in the game today marks the highest scoring contest in UCCS program history.
  • Caleb Stubbings hit two homeruns in the game today, his first multi-homerun game in his career.
  • Kit Wigington's third inning blast was his first on the season and his first career homerun as a Mountain Lion.
  • The 17 runs UCCS put up on offense were the most they have scored in a game this season.
  • Kiichi Sato stole two bags today, the first time he has done so in a single game in his UCCS career, bringing his steals total to seven on the season. He also crossed home plate five times in the game which is also a single game high in his career.

UP NEXT
  • The Mountain Lions return home tomorrow afternoon, March 1st, for their final game in a four day stretch as they take on the visiting St. Cloud State Huskies at 1 p.m.
