PREVIEW | UCCS Continues Non-Conference Slate With Home Opener Against UMary

UCCS Baseball is back inside Mountain Lion Park for the first time this season as they prepare to host University of Mary for a four-game series starting on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. The series will continue with a double-header at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27 and will conclude with a 2 p.m. game on Monday, Feb. 28

Last Time Out
  • UCCS registered their third win of the season last week after outlasting Colorado State University of Pueblo on the road at a final of 11-8 in a non-conference matchup.
  • UCCS came to outhit the ThunderWolves 13-11 with eight of UCCS' hits going down as extra base hits, including seven doubles and one home run.
  • It was a pitching by committee effort for the Mountain Lions as eight different pitchers saw action, including Hunter Owens who got the win and Joseph Harris who claimed the save.
  • The Mountain Lions got on the board early in the game with a three-run second inning and held onto to the lead from that point after adding four runs in the sixth and ninth innings.
  • CSU Pueblo tallied a run in the second and fifth inning before making a late game push in the bottom of the ninth by brining six runs across. But UCCS' Harris was able to shutdown the ThunderWolves by forcing a groundball with runners on first and second to seal the win.
 
RMAC Standings
  • UCCS will begin their conference schedule on Mar. 11 with a four-game series against New Mexico Highlands University at Mountain Lion Park.
 
The Series
  • UCCS and University of Mary will play their first ever series against one another this weekend.
 
Scouting UMary
  • The Marauders (2-2, 0-0 NSIC) recently come off a road series with Lindenwood University where UMary went 2-2 to start their season.
  • An offense that is averaging 5.25 runs and 8.0 hits per game, three Marauders are batting .400 or higher with sophomore catcher Ben Prediger leading the offense at a .500 average off four hits in eight at-bats. Fellow sophomore and Colorado native Michael Polson pace the Marauders with six hits while batting .429 as James Calvin has driven in a team high nine RBI.
  • UMary pitchers Austin Wagner and Andrew Brooks feature both of the Marauders wins with ERA's of 3.00 and 4.50, respectively. Jonathan Draheim joins Wagner with a team high six innings pitched as Draheim has thrown his way to a 1.50 ERA.
  • A total of eight extra base hits have come the Marauders' way as seven doubles and one triple have been hit with James Calvin being responsible for four doubles while also leading the team in OPS at 1.192.
 
Hot Takes
  • Seven different Mountain Lions combined for 13 hits in last week's game with six of those hitters registering two hits and all seven Mountain Lions tallying one or more RBI.
  • Hunter Owens registered his first ever collegiate win with Joseph Harris recording his second career save in the black and gold.
  • The Mountain Lions tallied seven doubles for the seventh time in program history in last week's win over CSU Pueblo.
  • Caleb Stubbings and Kiichi Sato are tied for the team lead in RBI with seven. Sato also paces the Mountain Lions in batting average (.316), doubles (six), and hits (12) while nabbing three stolen bases.
  • UCCS has outhit their opponent in six of nine games this season and are averaging 8.89 hits per game.
  • With a total of 25 doubles and an average of 2.78 per game, UCCS ranks 14th in Division II in doubles per game.
  • The Mountain Lions' pitching staff has held the opposition to a .230 batting average with five or more strikeouts being recorded in the last five games.
  • Jonathan Cowles and Cole Philip have notched double-digit strikeouts with 13 and 11, respectively.
  • Freshman Brock Weiss has been effective out of the bullpen with a flawless ERA in 4.2 innings of work and four strikeouts.
 
UCCS Under Head Coach Dave Hajek
  • Dave Hajek, who led UCCS to its first RMAC championship in program history, is in his sixth season as the Head Coach of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball program in 2022. He's coached the only MLB Draft pick in Zach Hall and the only All-Americans in Matt McDermott, Matt Clarke, and Evan Richards.
  • In six seasons, Hajek holds a .552 winning percentage with a 122-99 overall record that includes, four RMAC Tournament appearances, one RMAC Tournament Championship, a 5-7 RMAC Tournament record, and one NCAA Tournament appearance.
