GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs track & field teams closed out day one of the Maverick Multi and Open in Grand Junction, Colo. with four provisional marks as
Dawson Hopkinson claimed one of those marks with a new school record and top-5 Division II mark in the pole vault.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• RMAC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year
Layla Almasri registered the first provisional mark on the weekend by running to a first place time of 17:33.04 in the 5000m for a new facility record, which converted to an impressive 17:08.07. Just as she did in the indoor season, outdoor freshman
Riley McGrath was stride for stride with Almasri as she clocked a second place time of 17:37.19. Fellow freshman
Sarah Bassett earned her way into the top-10 with a seventh place time of 18:47.16.
• Senior
Dawson Hopkinson had a career day at the pole vault after breaking the outdoor school record with a stellar mark of 5.11m. The mark gives Hopkinson a new PR as he vaulted his way what is currently the fifth best Division II provisional mark to take second place in the event and register the top collegiate finish.
• Freshmen
Emily Arseneau and
Caden Showalter each notched a new PR in the discus with Arseneau finishing in sixth with a throw of 35.97m and Showalter recording a seventh place mark of 43.74m.
• In the javelin, the Mountain Lions claimed three of the top-4 finishes as Caroline Walters led the way with a new facility record and first place mark of 35.44m. Freshman
Kamryn Bohlken followed right behind Walters with a second place mark of 31.57m as
Cassielynn Bonner took fourth with a throw of 29.15m. On the men's side,
Daniel Furcron worked his way to second place after registering a mark of 46.41m.
• The UCCS men's distance team ran a great race in the 10000m as they came away with two provisional times with both
Mark Simmons and
Matthew Schramm walking away with provisional qualifying times. Simmons raced to a provisional time of 30:37.75 to finish in seventh place as Schramm clocked a ninth place time of 30:40.15. Outdoor junior Mariss Kuik tallied another event win for the Mountain Lions as the distance runner took to the track to clock a women's 10000m time of 40:12.09.
• Through the first day of multi events, the men's decathlon has two Mountain Lions in the top-5 as freshman
Thorben Hast sits in third place with 3,632 points and junior
Sam Repsher sitting in fourth place with 3,439 points after five events. In the women's heptathlon, four events were wrapped up on Friday with
Ella McKinna-Worrell leading the way for the Mountain Lions in second place at 2,650 points. Outdoor freshman
Faith Novess is in fifth place at 2,546 points as freshman
Cassidy Bittner sits in ninth with 2,242 points.

The Mountain Lions will continue competition on Saturday, Apr. 9 with the hammer throw starting off day two at 9 a.m. inside the CMU Track & Field Complex.
