COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs track and field teams hosted and competed in UCCS Meet #3 on Saturday as the strong performances continue to pour in for the indoor season. The Mountain Lions scored a combined 170.5 points, added nine national qualifying marks, and registered two school records.
UCCS Meet #3 was scored off points of 5, 3,2, and 1 in 15 events for first, second, third, and fourth place respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
At the pits, the UCCS men's team of
Peter Ackah,
Peyton Turnage, and
Dakota Abbott each recorded national qualifying marks as they finished in second, third, and fourth place respectively in the long jump. Ackah recorded yet another automatic qualifying mark with a leap of 7.65m as Turnage jumped to a PR of 7.34m. Abbott improved on his provisional mark from last weekend as the junior claimed a jump of 7.21m.
Reigning RMAC Field Athlete of the Week
Hannah Meek looked to be just warming up last weekend as she bettered her long jump and triple provisional marks on Saturday to win both events. Meek registered a jump of 5.93m in the long jump then garnered a PR in the women's jump with a mark of 12.33m.
At the track, the Mountains Lions got it done from top to bottom starting with
Afewerki Zeru who broke another program record for the second consecutive weekend as he ran to an incredible converted time of 14:01.25 in the men's 5000m, and punching his ticket to indoor championships with an automatic qualifying time.
Evan Graff also picked up where he left off last weekend as he clocked a mile conversion time of 4:07.48 to improve on his provisional mark, notch a new PR, and take third place in the event.
For the women,
Riley McGrath and
Kate Hedlund followed the pace of
Layla Almasri to post their first collegiate provisional marks as they took first and second with converted times of 4:57.26 and 4:57.73 respectively in the women's mile.
On the inside of the track, senior
Kayla Zink sprinted to a provisional time of 7.54s in the 60m to win the event. She also got the job done in the 200m by clocking in at 25.37s while junior
Brittany Fuchs trailed right behind Zink with a second-place time of 25.38s.
For the second straight meet, freshman
Melissa Moreni won the 60m hurdles as she clocked in at 8.94s followed by a second-place time of 9.14s from
Cameron Tracy, and a third-place time of 9.15s from
Alexis Carroll in the event.
For the men's sprinters, sophomore
Brian Mosley Jr. was able to keep up with professional sprinters in the 60m by racing to a PR time of 6.84s as junior
Angel Laca won the 200m with a time of 22.44s.
In the throws events, freshman
Justyn Loper threw a top mark of 17.57m as senior
Colton Homuth took the men's shot put with an event winning mark of 15.50m. On the women's side, sophomore
Anna Holland won both the shot put and the weight throw with heaves of 11.35m and 14.84m respectively. To wrap up the field events,
Skye Ciccarelli and
Tanner Walsh matched each other with the top mark of 2.03m in the men's high jump.
BEYOND THE RESULTS
- Afewerki Zeru recorded the fastest 5000m time in school history with a time of 14:01.25. The automatic qualifying mark ranks as the third fastest time in DII this season.
- Hannah Meek's triple jump mark of 12.33m sets a new school record and ranks third in DII. Her long jump mark of 5.93m also ranks third in DII.
- Evan Graff's improved mile time of 4:07.48 is the ninth fastest time in DII.
- Kayla Zink's improved 60m time of 7.54s is currently the third fastest in DII.
- Long jumpers Peter Ackah, Peyton Turnage, and Dakota Abbott rank first, fourth and ninth respectively in DII.
