COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball head coach
Dave Hajek announced the signing of four new Mountain Lions for the upcoming 2020 season.
"We are very excited about the physicality of this entire 2020 class," Hajek emphasized. "They will challenge and compliment the program as we continue to develop to the championship level."
A native of Broomfield, Colo., Dylan Grierson comes to UCCS as a 2019 graduate from Legacy High School. While at Legacy, Grierson had 17 appearances on the bump where he registered a 5-5 record in 66 innings pitched (IP) with a 3.61 earned run average (ERA), 79 strikeouts, and holding opponents to a .235 batting average. On the offensive side of the ball, Greirson hit .269 with 29 hits as he tallied 22 runs scored, 23 runs batted in (RBI), four doubles, two triples, one home run, and 12 walks. His stellar play earned him all-conference honorable mention in 2018 as he was voted Legacy Offensive Player of the Year in 2018, and Legacy Pitcher of the Year in 2019. In Grierson's two years at varsity the team saw success as Legacy recorded the best record in program history with an 18-5 record as they reached regionals in both 2018 and 2019. They turned their 2019 regional appearance into a regional championship as Grierson and Legacy High School went on to make a 2019 playoff appearance. Off the diamond, Grierson is a two-time academic letter and a two-time Academic All-State selection (2018, 2019) as well as involved in DECA and the National Technical Honor Society.
"Dylan is tall projectable RHP with a solid grasp of pitching mechanics and a good feel for all of his pitches," said Hajek.
The grandson of former Major League Baseball pitcher, pitching coach, and manager Marcel Lachemann, Brady Lachemann is set to join the Mountain Lions in 2020 as a middle infielder. From Arroyo Grande, Calif., Lachemann is a 2020 graduate of Arroyo Grande High School where he was a three-year varsity letter in baseball. Lachemann held a .345 batting average, .485 slugging percentage, notched 51 runs scored and recorded 22 stolen bases in his time at Arroyo Grande as he posted strong senior year numbers with a .452 batting average, .581 slugging percentage, and 1.121 on base plus slugging. The 2020 team captain helped the Arroyo Grande High School Eagles to a CIF D2 Quarter Final appearance in 2019 as they worked to a No. 1 ranking in the CIF CS D2 before the season was cancelled. In the classroom, Lachemann was a seven-time selection to the Principle's List for maintaining a 3.5 GPA or higher. In addition to baseball Lachemann was also a Senior Class Officer.
"Brady is a smooth athletic infielder with an advanced ability to defend, who comes from a strong baseball lineage," said Hajek.
Transferring to UCCS from Riverside City College, Dylan Morace hit .270, two homeruns, and snagged two stolen bases as he earned associate's degrees in Social and behavioral Studies, Administration and Information Systems-Plan C, and Business Administration for his transfer from IGETC. Morace also made the Dean's List all four semesters and was an Orange Empire All-Academic selection. A 2018 graduate of Murrieta Valley High School, Morace held a .328 batting average while recording 26 RBI and 27 runs scored to become a two-time All-Southwestern League Team selection. Morace maintained a 3.7 cumulative GPA in high school as he was a four-year honor roll selection.
"Dylan is a versatile athletic outfielder with some polish to his overall game," stated Hajek. "He looks to be the type of player that can ignite an offense."
A 6-foot-5 pitcher from Goleta, Calif., Cole Philip is a 2020 graduate from Dos Pueblo High School. In 9.1 innings pitched, Philip has fanned nine batters while holding opponents to a .243 batting average. During the 2018-19 season, Philip registered a .667 batting average at the plate.
"Cole is a tall projectable right-handed pitcher with some big upside that will bring depth to our pitching staff for years to come," said Hajek.
Grierson, Lachemann, Morace, and Philip join Morgan Altherr, Kasey Campbell, Andrew Danko, Nickolas Esquivel, Jack Michalek, and Kit Wiggington in this year's signing class.
