PREVIEW | Track & Field Hosts Colorado Running Company Mountain Lion Open

  • The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's and women's track & field teams settle in this weekend as they host the Colorado Running Company Mountain Lion Open on Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8 inside Mountain Lion Fieldhouse.

Last Time Out
  • The Mountain Lions competed in the two-day Mines Winter Classic and Multi, hosted by Colorado School of Mines, as well as traveled to Albuquerque, N.M. for the UNM Team Open, hosted by University of New Mexico.
  • Over the course of the two days in Golden, Colo. at the Mines Winter Classic & Multi the Mountain Lions recorded six provisional marks and five event winners:
    • Freshman Justyn Loper made continues to get more comfortable in the black & gold with a provisional mark, first place finish, and new school record in the men's weight throw as he threw out to a mark of 17.95m.
    • Junior Sierra Suazo matched Loper with a first-place finish as she heaved a mark of 16.23m in the women's weight throw.
    • Sprints student-athlete Kayla Zink notched second place in the women's 60m sprint as she finished with a provisional qualifying time of 7.63s.
    • Redshirt senior Deshon Elcock fell just short of a first-place finish in the men's 60m sprint as he posted a provisional time of 6.82s for second place.
    • Senior Matt Hanson competed in the men's 60m hurdles where a time of 8.27s solidified first place.
    • Afeworki Zeru and Sky Ciccarelli each registered their first provisional marks of the indoor season with Zeru clocking a time of 15:14.92 for a third place finish in the men's 5000m, while Ciccarelli cleared a height of 2.05m for second place in the men's high jump.
    • The Mountain Lions continue to dominate in the jumps events as senior Will Ross led the way with an event winning mark of 7.42m in the men's long jump to improve on his provisional qualifying mark. Freshman Brendan Young followed Ross' lead with a first-place finish in the men's triple jump as Young recorded a mark of 14.19m.
  • A partial group of distance runners then traveled to the UNM Team Open where two provisional marks were claimed in a field of professional and Division I athletes:
    • Redshirt junior Kayla Wooten was the top Mountain Lion and Division II finish in the women's mile as a time of 4:59.28 gave Wooten her first provisional mark of the indoor season.
    • Maia Austin continues to be a machine as she finished right behind Wooten with a provisional qualifying time of 5:00.04.

  • UCCS Men's team ranks 31st in the nation and 3rd in the South Central Region.

Records Are Meant To Be Broken
  • UCCS has broken six school records after only four meets this indoor season:
    • Justyn Loper – Weight Throw - 17.95m (58' 10.75")
    • Will Ross – Long Jump – 7.42m (24' 4.25")
    • Deshon Elcock – 60m – 6.76 seconds
    • Dakota Abbott – Triple Jump – 14.79m (49' 1.25")
    • Hannah Meek – Triple Jump – 12.26m (40' 2.75")
    • Hannah Meek – Long Jump – 6.08m (19' 11.5")
    • Colton Homuth – Shot Put – 16.66m (54' 8")
    • Sam Repsher – Heptathlon – 4,896 points
Award Winners
  • Abbott and the Mountain Lions competed in the Air Force Invitational where they were the only Division II school in a field of primarily Division I teams. Abbott did not miss a beat in his first competition of the new year as the sophomore leaped to a provisional mark of 14.83m in the men's triple jump, good for a strong third place finish. The sophomore would currently have the ninth best mark in the nation and third best in the conference after his performance over the weekend, but Abbott set a new school record with a 14.97m mark back on Dec. 14 that ranks him seventh in DII and first in the RMAC. Abbott was named RMAC Field Athlete of the Week for the week of 1/01.
  • At the Colorado Running Company UCCS Invite, Abbott walked away with a school record, PR, and provisional mark as he leaped to a distance of 14.97m in the triple jump for second place. The new triple jump school record currently gives Abbott the seventh best mark in all of DII, and the top mark in the RMAC. Abbott then cemented a fourth-place finish in the long jump where he recorded a mark of 7.08m to be named RMAC Field Athlete of the Week for the week of 12/17.
  • Meek had a weekend to remember as she competed in both the Mines Alumni Classic & Multi and the Air Force Holiday Open to win RMAC Field Athlete of the Week for the week of 12/10. In Golden, Colo., Meek began the indoor season with a second place mark of 6.08m in the long jump that broke a school record, set a new PR, and provisionally qualified her for nationals. The junior did not stop there as she competed the next day at Air Force in the triple jump where she took first place with a mark of 12.26m that set a school record, goes down as a new PR, and provisionally qualified her for nationals.
UCCS Under Coach Ross Fellows
  • In three complete years at UCCS, Fellows has coached four national champions, 21 individual RMAC champions, three RMAC Freshmen of the Year, five RMAC Track Athletes of the Year, one RMAC Field Athlete of the Year, four RMAC Athletes of the Meet, and 24 all-region athletes.
  • At the helm, Fellows has helped coach 16 individual All-Americans who combine for a total of 30 All-America honors.
  • The UCCS woman's team have won their first ever indoor (2017-18) and outdoor (2018-19) track & field conference championships under Fellows' direction.
Upcoming Meets
  • The Mountain Lions hit the road next weekend as they head to Lubbock, Texas for the Texas Tech Shootout, hosted by Texas Tech University. The meet will be held on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15 inside Fuller Track & Field.
