Mountain Lions Have Strong Showing on Day One of CSM Winter Classic and Multis

GOLDEN, Colo. – Four NCAA provisional marks were met Friday afternoon by the University of Colorado Colorado Springs track and field programs on the first day of the Colorado School of Mines Winter Classic and Multis, hosted by CSM in Golden, Colo.
 
Will Ross won the long jump with a provisional mark of 7.42m (24-4.25) as four of the top six finishers in the event hailed from UCCS.  Sam Repsher was a close third place, leaping a distance of 7.03m (23-0.75).
 
Justyn Loper tossed the weight throw 17.95 meters (58-10.75) for a provisional mark to win the event, and also placed sixth n the shot with a mark of 14.15m (46-5.25), just .37m behind Parker Bays' fifth place toss of 14.52m (47-7.75).
 
Afewerki Zeru led the Mountain Lions five distance runners in the 5K, placing third overall with a provisional time of 15:14.92.
 
Harrison Huhn and Eric Sierra earned seventh place finishes in their respective events.  Huhn topped the pole vault at 4.47m (14-8) while Eric Sierra scored 2,387 points in the first day of the heptathlon.  Huhn posted marks in the 60m dash (7.51), long jump (6.19m), shot put (9.35m) and high jump (1.77m).  He will close out the final three events – 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1000m run on Saturday.
 
On the women's side, Sierra Suazo led a field of 21 competitors in the weight throw, recording a winning throw of 16.23m (53-3).
 
Maggie Remsberg was solid in the pentathlon, earning the second most points (3,166).  Remsberg scored 854 points in the 60m hurdles (9.27) and 736 points in the high jump (1.60m), placing second in each event.  She added 609 points in the long jump (5.18m), 568 points in the 800m run (2:40.4) and 399 points in the shot put (8.00m).
 
Brenna Kuskie earned a top five finish after placing third in the pole vault.  Kuskie cleared the bar at 3.49m (11-5.25).  Anna Holland added another top-five finish for the Mountain Lions, finishing fifth overall in the shot put with a mark of 12.08m (39-7.75).
 
UCCS will continue the two-day competition at the Mines Winter Classic and Multi on Saturday. The Mountain Lions will also be competing in Albuquerque, N.M. for the UNM Team Open.
