COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The No. 10 University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's cross country team opened their home season Saturday morning at the 12
th Annual UCCS Rust Buster Invite, held at Monument Valley Park in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Mountain Lions scored 64 points in the 8K race, finishing second behind Colorado School of Mines' perfect score.
Seventeen runners broke the 8K course record of 25:26. The Orediggers' Chris Catchcart bested all 79 racers with a time of 24:46.30.
Afewerki Zeru led the Mountain Lions after finishing in seventh place with a time of 24:58.2.
Sam Nofziger finished in the top 20 after scoring 12 points and placing 18
th overall in 25:29.
Matthew Schramm and
Mark Simmons scored points for the Mountain Lions, finishing within three seconds of each other in 25:36.8 and 25:39.7, respectively, to place 22
nd and 23
rd overall. Also finishing in back-to-back spots for 25
th and 26
th places were
Joshua Rogerson (25:52.1) and
Evan Graff (25:55.7).
Colorado Christian University scored 86 points for a third place finish, followed by MSU Denver with 101 points and Colorado College with 135 points.
The Mountain Lions will be back in action Sept. 28 in Nashville, Tenn. at the Trevecca Nazarene University Division II Showcase.
