COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The 2019 Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) announced their Baseball South Central All-Region Teams on Wednesday. From the University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team, juniors Matt McDermott and Matthew Clarke earned D2CCA All-Region First Team selections.

A combined 36 student-athletes made the All-Region Team, with 18 voted to both first team, and second team. The D2CCA All-South Central Region Teams were nominated and voted on by the region's Sports Information Directors.

A native of Aurora, Colo., McDermott had a breakout junior year as he set new career highs across the board. The starting shortstop went on to hit a team high .384 as he went deep nine times on his way to 42 RBI. McDermott's batting average ranks ninth in the conference, as he also sits ninth for slugging percentage (.661) and ranks tied for fourth in doubles (18) in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. On the defensive side of the ball, the RMAC Gold Glove selection recorded a conference high 184 assists at shortstop, as he fielded 27 double plays to finish with the seventh most in the RMAC. Along with the Gold Glove award, McDermott was also named to the All-RMAC First Team.

In his first season with the Mountain Lions, Clarke had a stellar junior season in the black and gold. A consistent leadoff hitter in the UCCS lineup, Clarke filled that role nicely at the top by hitting .378 with a team high 76 hits, and scoring 45 times over the course of the season. Clarke's 76 hits ranks top-5 in the RMAC as he sits with the fourth most, but Clarke went on to top the conference list with 20 doubles. The Sacramento, Calif. native added six home runs and 37 RBI to his offensive stat line. In 49 games played at second base this season, the All-RMAC First Team selection posted a .966 fielding percentage with 114 assists and 20 double plays turned in 2019.

With their D2CCA All-Region First Team selections, the UCCS middle infielders will now move on in the voting process and are now eligible for All-American voting.
