KEARNEY, Neb. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs track & field programs competed in a last chance meet on Sunday as the Mountain Lions traveled to Kearney, Neb. to the University of Nebraska-Kearney Loper Last Chance Twilight Meet.
UCCS had a small batch of student-athletes compete in Nebraska as they prepare themselves, and look to post more qualifying marks, for the 2019 Outdoor NCAA Championships in late May.
Jumps student-athletes
Hannah Meek and
Kaija Crowe topped their competition in the women's long jump as they leaped to marks of 6.15m and 6.02m for first place and second place, respectively. True freshman
Dakota Abbott worked his way into the top-3 of the men's long jump as he recorded a third place provisional mark of 7.26m.
Junior
Sheldon Downs registered a second provisional mark for the Mountain Lions by heaving a personal best of 16.87m in the shot put to finish fourth in the event.
Will Ross was not finished registering provisional marks for UCCS in the field events, as he jumped to a fifth place mark of 14.73m in the triple jump.
For track events,
Charlie Forbes came up just short of his best outdoor time (14.04s) in the 110m hurdles as he took the top time of 14.06s, which also went down as a provisional mark. The Mountain Lions went on to close out the Loper Last Chance Twilight by taking first place in the men's and women's 100m and 200m, as
Kayla Zink claimed the women's events and
Deshon Elcock finished first on the men's side.
The Mountain Lions will await the national qualifying list this week as they get ready to set their sights on the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Kingsville, Texas that starts on Thursday, May 23.
