COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs Track & Field program split up to compete in two different events this weekend as a group of student-athletes traveled to Canyon, Texas for the 8th Annual West Texas A&M University Classic & Multi, and another group traveling to Boulder, Colo. for the Colorado University Invite.
CU Invite
The Mountain Lions group of student-athletes mainly consisted of distance runners for the CU Invite as senior Skylyn Webb highlighted UCCS on Saturday with a fifth place finish in the women's 1500m, her first 1500m race of the season. Webb finished with a time of 4:31.32 as two professional athletes took first and second place in the race, as she registered a provisional qualifying mark.
Senior David Kimaiyo led the way on the men's side as he competed in the men's 3000m steeplechase where he finished with a fourth place time of 9:49.66.
West Texas A&M Classic & Multi
In Canyon, Texas, sprinter Kayla Zink posted two provisional qualifying marks in the 100m and 200m with times of 11.81 (seventh place) and 24.18 (sixth place) respectively. Fellow sprinter Deshon Elcock competed in the 200m where he sprinted to a fifth place time of 21.11, which goes down as a top provisional mark for the junior.
After sitting in second place in the women's heptathlon entering today, Kaija Crowe came out strong to post a first place finish as well as a national provisional mark with 4,843 points.
On the men's side, in the field events, freshman Dakota Abbott recorded a mark of 14.70m in the men's triple jump to finish third in the event, while also solidifying a provisional mark. Throws student-athlete Colton Homuth joined in on the national qualifying action by throwing to a provisional mark distance of 52.44m, good for a third place finish.
The Mountain Lions were able to notch two more first place finishes on Saturday as Hannah Meeks and Colton Harkins bagged top marks in the triple jump and javelin throw, respectively. After registering her first provisional mark of the outdoor season in the long jump, Meeks leaped to a mark of 11.60m. Harkins launched a mark of 52.44m in the javelin throw to best seven other competitors in the field.
Freshman Miah Keller followed right behind Hannah Meek in the women's triple jump as she took second place with a mark of 11.31m. Jada Carr also had a high finish in the triple jump, as she took fourth with a mark 11.13m.
Field student-athletes Derek Valdez and Nathan Courtney posted strong finishes in the men's high jump as Valdez finished with a third place mark of 1.98m, with Courtney finishing with a fourth place mark of 1.93m.
With another strong weekend in the books, UCCS Track & Field will be back in action next weekend as they will be splitting up to travel to Golden, Colo. for the Colorado School of Mines Kit Mayer Invite on Saturday, Apr. 13, and also traveling to Kearney, Neb. For the University of Nebraska-Kearney Loper Invite on Apr. 13.
