COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs track & field programs got to work on Saturday as they begin to pick up momentum heading into the conference championships by competing in three different meets. The meets spanned from Colorado to California as the Mountain Lions competed in the Beach Invitational (Long Beach, Calif.), Mt. SAC Relays (Torrance, Calif.), and the Mines Nature's Bakery Invite (Golden, Colo.).
Beach Invitational, Hosted by Long Beach State University
After posting his highest finish in the 110m hurdles of the season on Friday,
Charlie Forbes put that to rest as he posted a provisional mark and set a new program record with a time of 14.04s. Forbes' mark took fourth place, was the top Division II finish in the 110m hurdles, and currently stands tied for the fastest time in DII.
Mt. SAC Relays, Hosted by Mt. San Antonio College
Senior
Skylyn Webb competed in the exclusive Mt. SAC Relays where she ran against elite runners from all over the nation and all over the world. In the 800m, Webb finished with an automatic qualifying time of 2:04.70 to finish in second place at the invitational. Webb was the top collegiate finisher among the competitors as she beat out high-level professional athletes in the process. The senior's time currently ranks second in Division II.
Mines Nature's Bakery Invite, Hosted by Colorado School of Mines
In Golden, Colo., the Mountain Lions went on to notch three provisional marks while adding top performances on both the men and women's side.
The three provisional qualifying marks came from field events as
Colton Homuth and
Sheldon Downs claimed two in the shot put, with
Dawson Hopkinson recording a provisional in the men's pole vault. Homuth and Downs finished with marks of 16.40m (second place) and 16.22m (third place) while Hopkinson took second place with a height of 4.92m.
On the track side, UCCS had five student-athletes shape out the top-10 in the men's 1500m as
Willie Moore,
Sam Nofziger (fourth place),
Evan Graff (fifth place), Matt Schramm (seventh place), and Afeworki Zeru (eighth place) were represented in the black and gold. Moore led the pack of five by racing to a third place time of 4:02.93.
The women's team nearly repeated the men's performance in the 1500m as
Ellie Enderle (4:50.30),
Katie Novak (4:52.27), and
Hannah Ellis (4:53.97) finished in third, fourth, and fifth place respectively.
UCCS will be back in action next weekend as they prepare to compete in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Outdoor Championships from Friday, Apr. 26 through Sunday, Apr. 28.
