PITTSBURG, Kan. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs track & field programs made a huge splash in day two of the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships inside Pittsburg State University Plaster Center, in Pittsburg, Kan. With a combined four Mountain Lions competing on Saturday, UCCS bagged four All-American honors and two individual national championships to wrap up nationals.
As a team, the UCCS women's team finished in eighth place, while the men's team finished in 21st place to top off a stellar weekend for the Mountain Lions.
After earning one All-American honor yesterday in the long jump, sophomore
Kaija Crowe came back Sunday to compete in the women's pentathlon where she finished fifth overall in a field of 15 competitors, registering 3,801 points. As only a sophomore, Crowe has already improved on her indoor national appearance from when she was a freshman, improving on her seventh place finish from just a year ago. Her fifth place finish gave her the second national indoor podium finish of her career, as well as her third All-American honor during her indoor collegiate career.
Momentum kept building for the Mountain Lions throughout the day as junior
Charlie Forbes etched his name in the UCCS record books, becoming the first indoor men's national champion in Mountain Lion history. Forbes automatically qualified for the finals on Friday with a PR time of 7.94s, and entered Saturday with the top time in the 60m hurdle prelims. In the finals, Forbes went on to further improve on his time as he finished with yet another PR of 7.89s, and go on to be crowned national champion.
Sophomore
Kayla Zink followed up right after Forbes, as she competed in the 60m dash. After qualifying with a PR of 7.47s, Zink sprinted to a new PR time of 7.44s to claim fifth place in the finals and earn her first career All-American honor.
But the Mountain Lions were still not done racking in the major awards as
Skylyn Webb was the last one to compete for UCCS. With an automatic qualifying time of 2:07.76 on Friday, Webb topped the list of eight competitors going into the 800m finals. In the final race, it was neck and neck between Webb and Grand Valley State University's Rachel Walters coming around the final 200m. Webb, who led a majority of the race, was able to maintain the edge going down the final stretch to earn the title of national champion in the 800m. Her time of 2:04.94 set a new meet record, as well as a new facility record, and put her into the UCCS Mountain Lions Record Books as the first indoor women's national champion.
The Mountain Lions' incredible performances at nationals put a high note on the 2018-19 indoor season, as they officially close out the indoor season. UCCS will now turn their focus to the outdoor season as they prepare for the Colorado State University-Pueblo Early Bird Invite, which will take place in Pueblo, Colo. on Saturday, March 16.
