UCCS Claims Four Events in CSU-P Spank Blasing Meet

PUEBLO, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs Track & Field program competed in the Colorado State University-Pueblo Spank Blasing Meet on Thursday where the Mountain Lions claimed first place in four events at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl.

Sophomore Kaija Crowe was one of those event winners as she jumped to a provisional qualifying mark of 6.06m in the long jump. Crowe's provisional mark not only was the top mark of the day, but it currently stands as the best mark in Division II. The multi-event student-athlete also competed in the javelin throw where she had a fifth place mark of 3.20m.

Junior Deshon Elcock notched another first place finish in the 100m dash for the outdoor season with a time of 10.69s, which bested 23 other competitors. Kayla Zink, Brittany Fuchs, and Shewli Ghosh helped shape the women's 100m dash top-10 as they finished second (11.93s), third (12.30s) and sixth (12.68s) respectively. The team of Ghosh, Zink, Fuchs, and Amyre Ellis did not stop there as they took first place in the 4x400m relay with a time of 47.45s, beating out three other Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) schools.

In the men's 400m, Caleb Simons grabbed his first event title of the outdoor season by racing to a time of 49.16s. Andrew Thompson joined in on the 400m action as he finished in the top-10 with a sixth place time of 50.31s.

On the field events side, Morgan Barone (1.60m) and Olivia Landers (1.50m) took second and sixth place respectively, while Tanner Walsh solidified a second place mark in the men's high jump (2.00m). With Barone's and Walsh's second place finishes, they represented the top DII finishers in the events.

Pole Vaulters Dawson Hopkinson (4.53m), Sam Repsher (4.38m), and Cooper Daniels (4.38m) finished in 4th-6th respectively as they competed in the men's pole vault.

The UCCS women's team made strong appearances in the javelin throw and the 100m hurdles as Aleksandra Anderson snagged a seventh place finish in the javelin throw (23.73m) and a second place finish in the 100m hurdles (15.07s). Kelsey Calhoun also competed in multiple events as she claimed third in the discus (41.92m), 11th in the hammer throw (34.00m), and fourth in the javelin throw (34.93m).

After yet another strong performance on Thursday, the Mountain Lions will be bounce back on Friday in Missouri as the distance runners compete in the WashU Invite hosted by Washington State University in St. Louis.
