UCCS Registers Two Top-3 Finishes at the RMAC Championships

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs track & field program recorded top three team finishes on both the men's and women's side at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships, inside Adams State University High Altitude Training Center.

With 103 team points, the UCCS men's track & field team finished in third place as Western State Colorado University are the RMAC Champions with 131 points. The UCCS women's track & field team finished in second place with 125 points as Adams State won the meet with 157 points.

The Mountain Lions ended day two of RMAC Championships with a bang by posting 12 podium finishes, four RMAC Champions, eight provisional marks, one RMAC Track Record, and one automatic qualifying mark. UCCS then came away with two awards at the end of the meet as Kaija Crowe and Derek Valdez won Athletes of the Meet.

Crowe continued her top performances today with a second place finish with a mark of 1.65m in the women's high jump. Valdez came out and registered an automatic qualifying mark in the men's high jump as he leaped out of the fieldhouse with a mark 2.17m to become RMAC Champion. The auto mark now stands as a new PR for Valdez.

There was another Mountain Lion that earned a podium spot in the high jump, and that student-athlete is Tanner Walsh. Walsh jumped to a height of 2.05m to take home bronze and register a provisional mark in the process.

Senior Skylyn Webb was ready to compete in the 400m and 800m finals as she ran to RMAC Champion times of 54.65 and 2:11.46. Each of her first place times went down as provisional marks with her 54.65 400m time setting a new RMAC Record. In the men's 400m, Caleb Simons was able to finish with a time of 49.68 to register third place on the podium.

Kayla Zink became familiar with the podium with two third place finishes in the 60m (7.59) and 200m (24.79) dash. Both of her performances earned her bronze, but her times also provisionally qualified for the national tournament.

On the men's side, Deshon Elcock sprinted ahead to a time 21.85 to take home silver in the 200m , while Charlie Forbes was crowned RMAC Champion with a blazing speed of 7.97 in the 60m hurdles.

After just missing out on a podium finish on Friday, Will Ross would make up for it by competing in the triple jump and bagging a provisional mark of 14.39m to take third in the event.

With a top-3 finish yesterday, Conor Bertles added his second Saturday afternoon in the men's shot put by heaving to a provisional mark of 16.11m, which placed him on the podium for a bronze finish.

On the weekend, the Mountain Lions registered an outstanding 19 podium finishes, five RMAC Champions, 15 provisional marks, and one automatic qualifying mark to wrap up their second and third place team finishes.

UCCS will bring the 2018-19 indoor season to an end in two weeks as they compete in nationals , which will be held in Pittsburg, Kan. The NCAA Championships will span over two days with the first day of competition beginning on Friday, Mar. 8.
