COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs track & field program competed in the United State Air Force Academy (USAFA) Collegiate Open Friday afternoon, their last regular season meet of the indoor season before the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Championships.
In a field of Division I and Division II student-athletes, as well as professional athletes, UCCS finished the day with two provisional marks, three event winners, six-second place finishes, and 13 personal bests.
Both of Friday's provisional marks came in the field events as junior
Will Ross posted a provisional mark of 14.84m, which also gave him the best mark in the men's triple jump.
Brenna Kuskie competed in the pole vault and registered the second provisional mark for UCCS with a height of 3.65m, giving her a new PR.
Sophomore
Shewli Ghosh and redshirt freshman
Layla Almasri wanted in on the first place finishes too as Ghosh took first with a PR time of 25.87 in the 200m, and Almasri claimed event winner in the 800m with a PR time of 2:20.24. UCCS went on to take second and third in the 800m as
Brittany Fuchs (2
nd) and
Diana Reynolds (3
rd) with each runner recording PRs times of 26.03 and 26.31 respectively.
Also in the field events, throwers
Colton Homuth,
Conor Bertles, and
Sierra Suazo all finished as the top DII student-athletes in their events while taking second place. Homuth threw for a PR distance of 15.97m, as he threw for a second PR in the weight throw with a mark of 16.19. Bertles finished just out of first place as he registered a PR of 16.83m in the men's weight throw. Suazo followed the trend and took second place in the women's weight throw with a mark of 15.84m, finishing behind a student-athlete from CU-Boulder who had a mark of 16.87m.
As for the track events,
Evan Graff finished with a time of 1:58.43 in the men's 800m to notch second place, as distance runner
Molly Weir posted a PR of her own in the women's mile with a time of 5:20.75 to take second place.
The Mountain Lions are looking to carry their momentum into the RMAC Conference Championships next week as they compete for two days, beginning on Friday, Feb. 22. Adams State University will be hosting the meet at the ASU High Altitude Training Center.
