COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs track & field teams' first weekend of the indoor season is officially in the books as the Mountain Lions wrapped up day two at the Mines Alumni Classic & Multi, and competed in the Air Force Holiday Open.
In Golden, Colo. at the Mines Alumni Classic & Multi, sophomore
Sam Repsher picked up where
Hannah Meek and
Will Ross left off on Thursday as the heptahlete set a new school record with a provisional mark of 4,896 points. With the new school record, Repsher placed seventh in the field of 21 athletes and finished as the second best Division II student-athlete in the event.
Along with multis, UCCS middle distance runners
Michela Hewitt,
Ashten Loeks, and
Erika Timbang helped close out day two as the freshmen finished on each other's heels with three top-10 times. Hewitt raced to a fourth place time of 1:00.91 with Loeks taking fifth with a time of 1:01.02, and Timbang placing sixth at a time of 1:01.22 in their collegiate debuts.
On the north side of Colorado Springs, the Mountain Lions continued the impressive marks at the Air Force Holiday Open as UCCS' posting of school records, personal bests, and provisional marks did not slow down. Junior
Colton Homuth begins the season on a career high note as he registered a school record and provisional mark of 16.66m in the men's shot put to win the event. Later, the Mountain Lions moved to the triple jump where they dominated the competition as Meek jumped out of the complex with another school record, personal best, and national qualifying mark of 12.26m to take first in the women's triple jump. Three more Mountain Lion women held top-5 finishes in the triple jump as
Miah Keller took third (11.52m),
Audrey Bloomquist took fourth (11.14m), and
Alexis Carroll placed fifth (10.96m). The UCCS men then held up the top of the leader board in the men's triple jump with sophomore
Dakota Abbott and
Will Ross leading the pack by taking second (14.82m) and first place (14.84m) respectively. Both Mountain Lions also joined in on the action to record PRs and provisional marks. Freshmen shined once again as
Brendan Young had a third place mark of 14.07m as
Peyton Turnage jumped out to 14.05m for fourth place to round out the men's triple jump top-5.
On the track side,
Deshon Elcock sprinted to a time of 6.84s to claim second place in the 60m, with
Kayla Zink and
Kayla Waterman taking third and fourth place as Zink earned a national qualifying mark of 7.61s in the women's 60m. Freshman
Zaire Jackson and senior
Matt Hanson followed suit with a pair of top-5 finishes in the 60m hurdles as Jackson raced to fourth place with a time of 8.32s with Hanson being timed at just a hair behind at 8.33s to take fifth.
After an explosive opening weekend, UCCS now turns their focus to the Colorado Running Company UCCS Invite on Saturday, Dec. 4, the Mountain Lions first of two home meets this season.
