PREVIEW | Men's Soccer Set for Round Two Against ASU and CSU-Pueblo

This Week's Games
  • The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team plays host to a pair of teams they took on two weeks ago.
  • On Friday, October 18, UCCS will take on Adams State University (ASU) at 6 p.m. inside Mountain Lion Stadium.
  • On Sunday, October 20, UCCS will play Colorado State University – Pueblo (CSUP) at 1 p.m. inside Mountain Lion Stadium.
Game Coverage Last Time Out
  • UCCS split their two games last weekend as the defeated Fort Lewis College (FLC) on Friday but fell to Colorado Mesa University (CMU) on Sunday. The Mountain Lions are now 3-7-1 on the season, including a 2-6-0 record in the RMAC.
  • On Friday, UCCS came out with something to prove as they shutout FLC 2-0 in a big win. Alex VonHolle scored in the sixth minute off an assist from Adam Baldwin as UCCS ended the first half up 1-0.
  • In the second half, the UCCS defense held strong as they stifled the Skyhawks all night. Then in the 60th minute, Liam McGuire headed in a goal off a great cross from VonHolle to make the score 2-0 and effectively give UCCS the victory.
  • UCCS outshot FLC 14-13 in the game, including 7-2 in shots on goal.
  • Jake Zink got the win in his first start of the season in goal for UCCS.
  • On Sunday, the Mountain Lions were not able to carry any momentum from Friday's win as they struggled against CMU.
  • UCCS outshot the Mavericks 11-10 overall and tied them in shots on goal 5-5, but unfortunately could not find the net as they fell 2-0.
  • VonHolle and Baldwin led the team in shots with three each, while VonHolle tallied a shot on goal. Samuel Gomez, Parker McClure, Jack Mills and Kolby Raineri all recorded a shot on goal as well.
  • Zink tallied three saves in the game, giving him five for the weekend.
RMAC Record/Standings
  • After splitting games last weekend and taking down the then third best team in the RMAC, UCCS now sits in ninth place in the RMAC standings. Their 3-7-1 overall record and 2-6-0 record in the RMAC is just a few games back from Metropolitan State University – Denver, who currently sits in eighth place.
  • The top five in the RMAC are: 1) Colorado School of Mines, 2) Regis University, 3) Colorado Mesa, 4) Westminster, 5) Dixie State University.
The Series
  • Against ASU, UCCS has a record of 13-2-1, which includes the most recent game from two weeks ago that UCCS lost by a score of 3-2. The Mountain Lions will look to avenge that loss on Friday.
  • Against CSUP, UCCS has an all-time 34-21-6, including a 5-2-3 record in the last 10 games. When they played two weeks ago, UCCS took home the victory 3-2. The Mountain Lions will look for the season sweep on Sunday.
Scouting the Opponent
  • ASU has struggled this season as they own a 1-8-1 overall record, including a 1-6-1 record in the RMAC. Despite their struggles, their only did come against UCCS. Offensively, the Grizzlies have scored seven goals on 120 shots (44 on goal) and allowed 22 goals this season.
  • ASU has assisted on four of those goals and has 38 corner kicks this year as well.
  • Individually, Abdoulie Danso leads the team in goals with two, while Dylan Udero shares a tie for second with four other players for second with one.
  • Isreal Varela is tied with three other players for the team lead in assist with one.
  • Goalkeeper Jacob Faircloth has anchored the defense for ASU and has racked up 52 saves and a save percentage of 70 percent
  • CSUP currently has a 4-8 overall record this season, including a 4-4 record in the RMAC which is good enough for seventh in the conference. The ThunderWolves have scored 19 goals on 205 shots (82 on goal) while allowing 19 goals this season.
  • CSUP also has 16 assists, 80 corner kicks and a shots on goal percentage of 40 percent.
  • Individually, Vinzent Zingel and Carlos Espinoza lead the offense for CSUP with five and four goals respectively, while Zingel adds an assist for his team high 11 points. Michael Chism and Richard Panknin are tied for the team lead in assists with three each.
  • Goalkeeper Tyler Harvey has played the majority of the season for the ThunderWolves and has tallied 26 saves and a save percentage of 63 percent.
Hot Takes
  • Senior Alex VonHolle and redshirt freshman Liam McGuire were the two Mountain Lions to find the net over the weekend.
  • For McGuire, that marks the third goal of the season which is second on the team behind VonHolle. He is also second on the team in points thanks to two assists.
  • Adam Baldwin tallied an assist on Friday which led to a goal by VonHolle, which marks his first career assist at UCCS.
  • VonHolle registered a goal and an assist over the weekend, giving him five of each for the season. It also means he has again risen up the UCCS All-Time Leaderboards. The goal gives him 25 for his career, which ranks fourth alone in UCCS history. VonHolle's assist gives him 19 for his career, which means that Alex VonHolle is now UCCS' all-time leader in assists.
  • Redshirt freshman Jake Zink earned his first win and his first career shutout in the black and gold on Friday. He also tallied five saves over the course of the weekend.

  • The forecast for Colorado Springs, Colo. on Friday, October 18 shows mostly sunny skies with a high temperature of 67 degrees and a low of 34 degrees. There is a slight chance of precipitation and winds are expected to gust up to 13 miles per hour.
  • On Sunday, October 20, the forecast shows partly cloudy skies but a high of only 54 degrees. Wind is also expected to gust up to 17 miles per hour.
RMAC Leaders
  • Three Mountain Lions rank in the top-10 of the RMAC as of this week.
  • Alex VonHolle ranks second in points (15, tied), points per game (1.36, tied), assists (five tied), assists per game (.455, tied), and shots per game (3.55), third in shots on goal (18, tied) and shots on goal per game (1.64), fourth in shots (39), fourth in goals per game (.455) and fifth in goals (five, tied).
  • Sam Bonano is tied for eighth in game winning goals with one.
  • Scott Jensen ranks ninth in saves per game (3.67) and 10th in saves (33), goals allowed (21) and goals against average (2.25).
UCCS Under Head Coach Brian Miller
  • UCCS is now 13-14-4 overall with coach Miller at the helm. The Mountain Lions are also 10-10-2 in conference games under coach Miller, a record they will look to improve to 12-10-2 this weekend.

  • Next weekend, UCCS will travel north to take on a pair of RMAC opponents.
  • On Friday, October 25, UCCS will be in Denver, Colo. taking on Metropolitan State University – Denver at 3 p.m.
  • On Sunday, October 27, UCCS will be in Lakewood, Colo. facing off against Colorado Christian University at 1 p.m.
