KANSAS CITY, MO. – There's a new number one team in the United Soccer Coaches Top-25 DII National Poll as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team comes in as the No. 1 nationally ranked team in all off Division II. After setting a new program record for the highest national ranking as the No. 2 team in the country for the past two weeks, the Mountain Lions break that record once again as they come in as the top team in the nation.
In a weekend where the Mountain Lions pitched two shutout victories and outscored the opposition 7-0, UCCS only allowed a combined five shots and didn't give up a single shot on goal as they defeated Western Colorado University 5-0 and Colorado Mesa University 2-0. UCCS still remains as the last unbeaten team in the South Central Region (8-0-0, 4-0-0 RMAC) as they've shown their dominance on both sides of the ball.
Defensively, the Mountain Lions have given up just three goals in eight games this season, posting a 0.427 goals against average that ranks second in the conference, third in the region, and 17
th in the nation. UCCS has held opponents to a 0.38 goals per game average while posting five shutouts for a .750 shutout percentage which ranks first in the conference, second in the region, and ninth in the nation. The Mountain Lions have not allowed a goal in the first half this season.
On the offensive side of the ball, UCCS is equally as impressive with 23 total goals this season, which ranks 13
th in Division II. Averaging 2.88 goals per game, the Mountain Lions post the third highest scoring offense in the region, and the 20
th highest scoring offense in the nation. UCCS has nearly tripled the opposition in shots 150-52 and corner kicks 36-14, as 12 different Mountain Lions have registered a goal this season.
The No. 1 Mountain Lions return home this weekend after playing six consecutive road games in three different states. UCCS will host a pair of Utah teams for Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend as the Mountain Lions face-off against Westminster College on Friday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m., then turn around on Sunday, Oct. 6 to play Dixie State University for a 1 p.m. match inside Mountain Lion Stadium.
