Mountain Lions Come Close to Sweeping the Mines DII Invite & Multi

GOLDEN, Colo. – After day two of the Mines DII Invite & Multi, hosted by Colorado School of Mines inside Steinhauer Fieldhouse, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's track team finished first with 138 points, as the UCCS men's team was 5.5 points behind Colorado School of Mines to place second with 134 points.

Sam Repsher was the first Mountain Lion to compete on Saturday as he wrapped up the men's heptathlon with a first place finish. Repsher entered day two 69 points behind first place but ended the day on top with a first place finish in the 60m hurdles (8.90), pole vault (4.20m), and 1000m (3:17.00) as he posted a provisional mark of 4,740 points.

Junior Conor Bertles and sophomore Sierra Suazo posted top marks for UCCS in the weight throw with Bertles' distance of 14.58m, and Suazo's distance of 13.05m.

In the 60m hurdles, junior Charlie Forbes flourished as he earned a first place finish with a PR and provisional time of 7.98 to tally 10 points for the UCCS men's team. On the women's side, freshman Cameron Tracy added six points to the UCCS women's team by finishing third with a time of 9.55.

During the men's and women's 60m and 200m sprint, the Mountain Lions ran away with the events as UCCS had a first place finisher on both the men's and women's sides to record 40 points from those events. Junior sprinter Deshon Elcock registered both a PR and a provisional mark as he ran ahead to a first place finish in a field of 19 competitors, contributing 10 points for the top finish. Sophomore Kayla Zink bagged 10 points as the top sprinter with a time of 7.75. In the 200m, sophomore Kamerin Valdes raced to a time of 26.37 to place ahead of 18 sprinters. For the men, Alex Beckley topped 10 other competitors with a time of 23.81 in the men's 200m.

Top marks in the 400m for UCCS includes junior Anthony Peters with a time of 54.66 (10th place finish), and Grace Wenham with a time of 1:02.77 (5th place finish). Junior David Higgins raced in the 800m to finish fifth out of 20 student-athletes with a time of 2:00.54.

Distance runners Sam Nofziger and Molly Weir came to post top-10 times for the Mountain Lions in the mile as Nofziger finished with a time of 4:32.33, and Weir recording a time 5:28.18.

UCCS Jumps student-athlete Will Ross competed in the triple jump where he posted the top mark of the meet, a new personal best, and a provisional mark of 14.52m. On the women's side, sophomore Hannah Meek was one of three provisional marks for the women's triple jump as she jumped to a third place mark of 11.92m.

In continuance with field events, Derek Valdez tied for first with a jump 2.02m, and Olivia Landers as well as Morgan Barone posted the same mark of 1.52m for a fifth place finish.

Day two of the meet ended with the 4x400m relay where the UCCS men's team of Kweshaan Thompson, Gary Kurtz, David Higgins, and Charlie Kieffer finished second with a time of 3:33.93. For the UCCS women 4x400m relay, the team of Jalen Jordan, Diana Reynolds, Grace Wenham, and Cameron Tracy cemented second place with a time of 4:09.46.

After a first place finish for the women's team, and a second place finish for the men's team, the Mountain Lions will look to keep the season rolling in the one day CU Invite on Saturday, Feb. 2 at CU-Boulder Balch Fieldhouse.
