COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs track and field teams competed in The Power 5 meet on Saturday, where the Mountain Lions placed first out of five teams with a score of 246.5 points to claim the traveling trophy inside of Mountain Lion Fieldhouse.
UCCS along with Adams State University, Colorado Mesa University, West Texas A&M University, and Western State Colorado University, all competed in the team meet. Scoring for the team meet included individual events that were scored as 10-8-6-4-2-1, while relays were scored as 10-8-6-4-2, with the men's and women's points being combined for a single program score.
The UCCS women's team contributed 126 of the total 246.5 points as the Mountain Lions claimed a total of five individual events. Sophomore
Hannah Meeks posted two first place finishes with a mark of 5.83m in the long jump and a mark of 11.99m in the triple jump. Senior
Skylyn Webb recorded a first place finish of her own by finishing with a time of 55.82 in the 400m.
Brenna Kuskie cleared a mark of 11' 0.75'' in the pole vault to also finish first in the event. Towards the end of the day, the 4x400m team of Webb,
Dejah Glover,
Aleksandra Anderson, and
Kaija Crowe helped seal the win for the Mountain Lions by posting a time of 3:55.14.
Meeks two first place finishes in jumps gave her a team high 20 points in the meet.
The men's finished first in four events, and contributed 120.5 points. Four different Mountain Lions claimed first place finishes, starting with
Conor Bertles who edged out Mesa's Marshall McKown in the weight throws with a distance of 52' 8.25''.
Will Ross would followed up Bertles with a mark of 14.66m in the triple jump, which was the best out of 10 competitors.
Deshon Elcock and
Charlie Forbes got it done in the track events as Elcock finished with a first place time of 6.85 in the 60m, and Forbes posting a first place time of 8.04 in the 60m hurdles.
Ross notched a team high 18 points for the Mountain Lions with the first place finish in the triple jump, and a second place finish in the long jump with a mark of 7.20m.
Five different Mountain Lions recorded at total of seven provisional marks during The Power 5 meet. Those marks include:
On the women's side, No. 11 ranked UCCS finished just behind the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Preseason DII No.1 team in the nation Adams State in points, as the Grizzlies finished with 132 points. But the Mountain Lions did finish ahead of No. 4 ranked West Texas A&M and No. 8 ranked Western State.
The UCCS men's team on the other hand finished ahead of all four teams in points, including No. 1 ranked Adams State, No. 10 Colorado Mesa, No. 12 West Texas A&M, and No. 29 Western State.
UCCS will head back to Golden, Colo. to compete in the two day Colorado School of Mines DII Invite on Friday, Jan. 25 and Saturday, Jan. 26.
