BRADENTON, Fla. – Sophomore
William Mayhew wrapped-up the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a runner-up performance in the 800m on Saturday.
Mayhew ran the event with a season-best time of 1:49.94, in a race that went down to the wire. The transfer was edged out by Fort Hays' Decano Cronin (1:49.75) while just beating out conference rival Robin Butler (1:49.98) of Western State.
The sophomore sat in third place after the first lap with a split time of 54.94 and nearly kept that pace on the final lap with a time of 55.01.
For his second place finish, Mayhew earns All-American First Team honors while also scoring eight points for UCCS. The result in the 800m is also a new best for UCCS as the previous top program performance was set by Moses Tum, who placed sixth in both 2004 and 2005.
The race caps off a successful debut season with the Mountain Lions as Mayhew earned All-American Second Team honors at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in March after placing ninth overall in the same event.
