COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs will play its final conference series of the season with the chance to clinch a spot in the 2017 RMAC Tournament when the Mountain Lions (22-23, 17-15 RMAC) take on Colorado State-Pueblo (20-22, 14-14 RMAC) in Pueblo, Colo. The games will be played on Friday and Sunday with a storm system forecasted to move through the region late Friday night and on Saturday.
Friday's doubleheader will be split with a noon, nine-inning game at noon on the CSU-Pueblo campus at Rawlings Field, before moving downtown to Runyon Field for the team's annual "Pack the Park" promotion at 7 p.m.. Sunday's doubleheader will start at noon with both games on campus.
UCCS needs a split this weekend to clinch a spot in the tournament without having to rely on games next weekend during the team's bye week. The Mountain Lions are fifth in the standings and one spot ahead of CSU-Pueblo, which is playing to secure a bid as well. The ThunderWolves need five wins in the next two weeks to secure a bid, as seventh-place Colorado Christian would hold a tiebreaker if the teams ended tied in the standings. The tournament will take place May 10-13 in Grand Junction, Colo.
Zach Hall is third in the RMAC with 10 home runs and is on an 10-game hitting streak. Five of his 16 multi-hit games this season have come in the last eight games.
Bryan Chapin extended his hitting streak to 19 games after Wednesday's Air Force game and is leading the team with .463 this season.
Colin Cicere is second in the conference and tied for No. 37 in Division II with seven pitching victories this season, while
Joe Slocum leads the RMAC and is No. 15 in the nation with eight saves.
The Mountain Lions will be facing one of the top 10 teams in the nation with 0.48 triples per game on offense and 1.07 double plays per game on defense. Kyle Lazcano leads the ThunderWolves pitching staff with a 2.50 earned run average in 11 starts for a 5-1 record.
