Men's Track & Field Start Indoor Season Strong at Grizzly Early Open

The Mountain Lions claimed four provisional qualiying marks in their first meet of the season

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's indoor track and field team got their season off to a hot start as the Mountain Lions claimed first place at the Adams State Early Grizzly Open.

UCCS was led by William Mayhew, who ran the fastest 800m time in all of Division II. The junior crossed the finish line with an altitude converted time of 1:49.88. Mayhew's time is a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships.

Sprinter LaChristopher Smith also ran his way to a provisional time in the 200m (21.69), which is currently the seventh fast time in Division II.

In the field events, Cameron Wright placed second overall in the pole vault as he notched a provisional height of 4.72m (15' 5.75") in his first-ever collegiate meet.

William Ross also earned a provisional mark in the triple jump with a distance of 14.43m (47' 4.25").

Other top performers included Caleb Simons winning the 400m along with DePree Kimber taking first place in the long jump.

By winning, UCCS can boast that it defeated the hosts, Adams State, who are the preseason No. 1-ranked team.  

The Mountain Lions are off for more than a month when they resume their season Jan. 19-20 at the Western State Quad Meet in Gunnison, Colo.
