COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team (11-9, 8-5 RMAC) will face teams at the two extremes of the RMAC standings for Blackout Weekend 2016 with a Friday game against Western New Mexico (1-17, 1-12 RMAC) and a Saturday game against New Mexico Highlands (11-8, 10-3 RMAC). Both games will tip at 7:30 p.m., at the Gallogly Events Center with local television coverage on the UCCS Channel on xfinity channel 20.
UCCS has won its last three games and moved into a tie for fifth in the RMAC standings. New Mexico Highlands is tied for the conference lead with Fort Lewis two games ahead of the Mountain Lions. MSU Denver and Colorado Mesa are tied for third with 9-4 conference records ahead of UCCS.
A pair of good rebounding games for
Alex Welsh could make him the all-time UCCS career rebounding leader by the end of the weekend. He will go into Friday's game with 775 career rebounds, and will need 25 to tie and 26 to break the record of 800 held by Jack Bain. Welsh is averaging 11 rebounds per game in the last four games and second in the RMAC for the overall season with 9.2 rebounds per game.
The Mountain Lions scored a program-record 61 first half points last Saturday at Black Hills State and finished with a 93-66 win against the Yellow Jackets. It was the fourth 90-point game of the season and one of the largest margins of victory in program history. UCCS shot 71 percent from the field in the first half and has the best field goal percentage in the conference this season with 49.2 percent.
Willie McCray is leading Western New Mexico with 10.6 points per game and scored a season-high 39 points in a four-overtime game against Northern New Mexico. The Mustangs earned their first win of the season in overtime in a 74-70 victory against Chadron State on Jan. 16.
Jonathan Mines is fourth in the RMAC with a team-leading 21.4 points per game for New Mexico Highlands. The Cowboys lead the conference with 40.7 percent at the three-point line and 4.2 blocked shots per game. Marlon Johnson is averaging 9.1 rebounds per game and is one position behind Welsh in the conference statistics.
