Medley Relay 9th on First Day of Championships

GUNNISON, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs distance medley relay team ran within five seconds of the old Mountaineer Fieldhouse record and Ryan Buchanan finished less than two-tenths of a second out of the finals in the 400-meter dash after the first day of the 2015 RMAC Indoor Track and Field Championships at Western State Colorado University.

Ryder Tam, Buchanan, Justin Bills and David Marino ran an unadjusted time of 11 minutes, 13.21 seconds to finish ninth and one position out of scoring position in the overall team standings. Buchanan also doubled up on the opening day in the open 400 with 50.66 seconds to finish No. 12 in the preliminaries. He was two-hundredths of a second behind No. 11 and eight-hundredths away from a top 10 finish in the conference. Buchanan will continue the championships tomorrow in the 4x400-meter relay.

Ricardo Malta finished No. 21 in the 60-meter dash with 7.39 seconds and No. 22 in the 200-meter dash with 24.09 seconds in his first conference championship appearance. It was his fastest unadjusted times of the season in both events.

UCCS will continue action at noon on Saturday with the start of the mile run. The final events should conclude by 3:30 p.m., before the awards ceremony at 4 p.m.
