ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –
Raquell Castillo matched her best round of her career with a 5-over-par 77 and the University of Colorado Colorado Springs shot a 337 for a seventh-place team standing after the first round of the RMAC South event today at the University of New Mexico Golf Course. The Mountain Lions are fifth among the RMAC teams in the tournament at 49 strokes over par.
Castillo and
Forre Zook both started today on hole 10, and Castillo shot 1-over while Zook shot 3-over in the first half of the day. The Mountain Lions were only 17-over par on holes 10 through 18. Castillo finished her round with a birdie on hole nine to put together her 18-hole score of 77. She is two stokes out of a top-five finish and seven strokes behind the leader.
Zook went 6-over on holes one through nine and was second on the team with an overall score of 84 for 12-over-par. She is tied for No. 29 overall.
Alex Darwin recorded the second-best Mountain Lion score on the front nine with 6-over-par and finished with 14-over-par for an 86 for a No. 39 placement.
Jamie Zook and
Amanda Crites both turned in scorecards of 90 for 18-over-par to round out the UCCS team score of 337. The Mountain Lions are four strokes behind sixth-place Western New Mexico and one stroke ahead of eighth-place Regis. Midwestern State leads the field with a 302 for 14-over-par while MSU Denver is the top RMAC team in second place with 305.
UCCS will be paired with golfers from CSU-Pueblo, Western New Mexico and Regis for Tuesday's final round. The Mountain Lions will start on holes five through nine.
