DURANGO -- Behind a 19th-place finish by Jenna Dorsey-Spitz, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs women finished in fifth place Saturday at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships.
The Mountain Lions men's team took sixth place.
Dorsey-Spitz covered the 6-kilometer course at Hillcrest Golf Course in 24 minutes, 58.48 seconds. Kaitlyn Frier and Christy Severy were next for UCCS, finishing 38th and 39th respectively. Tavia Hammond was 44th in the 100-runner field, while Whitney Lund was 51st and Vivian Reed was 52nd.
Only 46.87 seconds separated UCCS' second-through-sixth runners as the Mountain Lions continued to display their penchant this season for strong pack discipline.
Because the Mountain Lion women defeated ninth-place Colorado State-Pueblo, UCCS earned two more points in the Steel and Silver rivalry series. UCCS now leads the 2007-08 series 7-4. CSU-Pueblo does not have a men's cross country team.
The UCCS men's team was paced by Dan Pinter, whose 27:25.02 finish on the 8-kilometer course was good for 23rd overall. Branson Bartlett and Gabe Small were next for the Mountain Lions, finishing 37th and 38th respectively. That duo was followed by Joel Kienitz (43rd), Alex Tiernan (47th), Dustin Simeons (50th), Carlos Ruibal (54th) and Chris Reynolds (57th).
Adams State won both the men's and women's races.
The Adams State women's team was paced by senior Brittany Somers who beat out 99 other runners for the 2007 RMAC Women's Runner of the Year honor. Somers finished the 6K race in 22:33.50. Teammate Ashley Quintana ran to a sixth place finish (23:19.71) and was the first freshman to finish the race and be named the 2007 RMAC Women's Freshman Runner of the Year. The team title is a record sixth straight title for the Grizzlies and 21st title since 1981. The Grizzlies posted a team score of 22 points.
The Grizzlies men's team finished with 33 points to win their fourth RMAC title in five years and 30th overall. Sophomore Aaron Braun crossed the finish line first in the 8K race to earn the 2007 RMAC Men's Runner of the Year award. Braun finished first out of 87 runners with a time of 25:16.64. Western State's Tyler Pennel completed the race in seventh place with a time of 25:55.31 to be named the 2007 RMAC Men's Freshman Runner of the Year.
Damon Martin, head coach of both Adams State's programs, was named the RMAC Cross Country Coach of the Year for the 53rd time in his career.Â
