KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Continuing their undefeated start to the season with a 1-0-1 record over the weekend, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team jumped to No. 3 in the Week 3 United Soccer Coaches National Rankings on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mountain Lions No. 3 national ranking ties their highest position in program history, matching a No. 3 ranking they received two seasons ago in Week 9 of the 2024 National Poll on Nov. 5, 2024.
California State University, Los Angeles find themselves at No. 1 after starting out unranked in pre-season poll and climbing the rankings across the first three weeks of the season. Cal State LA secured a 1-0 win on Saturday vs. Westmont College to continue their impressive 5-0 record this season. The Mountain Lions were one of three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) schools within the top 25, as No. 17 Regis University and No. 21 Colorado State University Pueblo joined them.
After a 3-0-1 start to the season, the Mountain Lions faced a then-receiving votes University of Hawaii Hilo side and grabbed a 2-1 win against the Vulcans on Wednesday night. Over the weekend, UCCS traveled to Canada and faced Simon Fraser University Saturday afternoon, with that game ending in a 1-1 draw.
The Mountain Lions had three different goalscorers over the two games. Sophomore forward
Cole Wearner scored his third goal, and Fifth Year forward
Marcus Garcia scored his second goal of the season in the game against the Vulcans.
Eduardo Macias scored the only goal during the 1-1 draw against Simon Fraser, his first of the season. Junior defender
Dillon Clarke shined over the weekend, as he helped the Mountain Lion's defense limit both the Vulcans and Red Leafs to just a single goal, while contributing with a pair of assists on the offensive end. With his two assists against Hawaii Hilo on Wednesday, Clarke now has three on the season which leads the team and ranks tied for third in the RMAC. This impressive performance earned Clarke the Week 3 RMAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honors.
The UCCS men's soccer team will be back home Thursday night, as they host Metropolitan State University Denver on Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. During the weekend, the Mountain Lions will travel up to Denver and face No. 17 Regis at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20.
