HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER: CMU 2, UCCS 1
- The Mavericks started off strong with a quick goal by Carson Dickey just and a minute and a half after the starting whistle. CMU earned a free position moments later, but Delaney Gnos' stunning save kept UCCS trailing by a single goal. After transitioning up the field, Charlotte Fannin lobbed an early pass to Ella Mills, who went on to secure a player-up goal and equalize the score. Sofia Watts, Leonard, and Brielle Fannin each logged a shot against Maverick goalkeeper Heather Hawkins in the ensuing 60 seconds, but could not successfully find the back of the net. Both teams suffered a slew of turnovers and remained scoreless over the next five minutes, until Sadie Chappuis spun a Mountain Lion defender and blasted a low shot past Gnos' left leg.
SECOND QUARTER: UCCS 4, CMU 2
- Ahead by one, CMU was pushed back into their defensive territory and allowed UCCS to earn a free position. Mills lined up for the shot and smashed the ball past Hawkins' stick, equalizing the score 2-2. Back on the attack once again, Julia Hoffman connected with Charlotte Fannin for the third goal of the evening. Exactly one minute later, Allison Hoffman found herself one-on-one with Hawkins and slipped a shot past her left shoulder, securing a 4-2 lead for the Mountain Lions. UCCS' stint of momentum came to a halt as Lilly Osterman logged two back-to-back goals within two minutes. With four minutes remaining in the first half, the Mavericks drew a free position, but Devon Morris's shot was skillfully blocked by Gnos. Jade Wilson grabbed the ground ball and sprinted up the field, finding Rylie Maready wide open behind the goal. Quickly making a flat run in front of the goal, Mills collected the ball from Rylie Maready and earned the Mountain Lions a 5-4 lead just before the halftime whistle blew.
THIRD QUARTER: CMU 3, UCCS 1
- UCCS secured a goal just 45 seconds into the third quarter after Kendra Knutson won the first draw control and connected with Mills, who went on to assist Charlotte Fannin's second goal against the Mavericks. The Mountain Lions were quickly put on defense as Carson Dickey won the following draw control and barrelled down the field before slipping a pass to unmarked Morris back-post. After collecting the 5th CMU goal of the night, Morris pushed UCCS back into their defensive territory yet again and earned a free position. After missing wide of the net, the Mountain Lions were able to grab the ground ball and transition forward. However, after forcing a turnover near midfield, Sofia Chock lobbed a pass to Dickey, who found a quick player-up scoring opportunity and equalized the score 6-6. The ensuing six minutes remained scoreless for each side, until Dickey sprinted down the center of the field past three UCCS defenders and slotted the ball past Gnos with 1.6 seconds on the clock, earning the Mavericks a 7-6 lead.
FOURTH QUARTER: UCCS 2, CMU 0
- Four minutes of back-and-forth action passed before Brielle Fannin connected with Watts for her 34th goal of the season. With a 7-7 draw reflected on the scoreboard, CMU drew two free positions, but were unsuccessful on both attempts as Gnos logged stellar saves. Each team carried out attacking plays over the next three minutes, but neither the Mountain Lions nor the Mavericks could find the back of the net to put themselves on top. UCCS earned a free position with two minutes left in regulation, but Allison Hoffman's shot was skillfully saved by Hawkins and the score remained a tie. Everything boiled down to one final play as the Mountain Lions possessed the ball around CMU's defensive area. Allie Schell found Leonard front-post, who turned and quickly slipped a shot past Hawkins' stick and cemented an 8-7 victory over the Mavericks.
