HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER: WU 3, UCCS 2
- Westminster struck early as Olivia Petrosky scored the first two goals of the game, giving the Griffins a 2-0 lead less than five minutes after the opening draw. A Westminster turnover in the seventh minute proved costly as Sofia Watts raced down the left side and found Charlotte Fannin cutting from the right for the Mountain Lions' first goal at 7:55. The Griffins pushed their lead back to two with 2:40 remaining in the quarter, but Allison Hoffman converted a free-position attempt with 25 seconds left to trim the deficit to 3-2 heading into the second.
SECOND QUARTER: WU 3, UCCS 1
- Petrosky opened the second quarter with her third goal of the game less than two minutes in to extend the Westminster lead. After a brief stoppage in play, the Mountain Lions showed patience on offense before Allie Schell connected with Brielle Fannin cutting through the middle. Fannin finished the play with a behind-the-head shot at 11:04 to make it 4-3. Westminster answered on the ensuing possession to regain a two-goal cushion and later added a free-position goal with 3:57 left in the half, taking their largest lead of the half, 6-3, into the break.
THIRD QUARTER: UCCS 5, WU 2
- Westminster opened the second half with a prolonged offensive possession, but goalkeeper Delaney Gnos came up with several key saves to keep the Mountain Lions within striking distance. UCCS broke through at the 9:06 mark when Sofia Watts converted a free-position opportunity to cut the deficit to 6-4. Westminster responded less than two minutes later, but Brielle Fannin quickly answered for UCCS after scooping up a ground ball off a Griffins turnover at midfield and taking it the distance to score midway through the quarter. After Westminster pushed its lead to 8-5 with 4:35 remaining, the Mountain Lions surged late in the period. Ella Mills and Brielle Fannin scored just 30 seconds apart to make it 8-7 with 3:34 left, and Rylie Maready capped the rally by finishing a bounce pass from Hoffman with 31 seconds remaining to tie the game at 8-8 heading into the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER: WU 4, UCCS 3
- Two early UCCS turnovers proved costly as Westminster capitalized with a pair of quick goals to reclaim the lead, 10-8. The Griffins extended their advantage to three before Watts and Brielle Fannin each converted free-position opportunities to bring the Mountain Lions within two, 12-10, with 50 seconds left in regulation. With seven seconds remaining, Ella Mills connected with Sydnee-Anne Moeller on a set play from the top of the attacking zone to cut the deficit to one. However, Westminster controlled the ensuing draw as time expired, securing the 12-11 victory.
