Multi Athletes Open Day One of WTAMU Jo Meaker Classic

CANYON, Texas – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs track & field team opened the first day of West Texas A&M University's Jo Meaker Classic on Thursday with a handful of student-athletes competing in the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Lilyana Delagarza had a strong start in the first four events of the women's heptathlon as she recorded a day one score of 2,711 points and currently sits in sixth place out of 15 competitors. The highlight of Delagarza's afternoon came in the high jump, where she posted a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying bar clearance of 1.68m to finish first in the group for the event. The second-year combined athlete also recorded personal best marks in each of the other three events she competed in with times of 16.72s in the 100m hurdles and 25.67s in the 200m dash to go along with a mark of 8.43m in the shot put.
  • The Mountain Lions had a pair of student-athletes competing in the first five events of the men's decathlon with junior Dillon Arvayo posting a day one score of 3,345 points and sophomore Evan Atkin coming in at 2,165 points. Arvayo established new personal best marks in the shot put (11.86m) and high jump (1.89m) while Atkin also recorded a personal best toss in the shot put at 11.11m.
BEYOND THE RESULTS
  • With her bar clearance of 1.68m in the heptathlon high jump, Delagarza moved into third place all-time in UCCS women's outdoor program history for the event.
UP NEXT
  • The Mountain Lions will be back in action tomorrow morning from the WTAMU Track & Field Complex for the final portion of the combined events and the start of the open competitions. The women's javelin throw will be the first event to get started at 9 a.m. (MT) with the decathlon scheduled to restart at 11 a.m. (MT) followed by the heptathlon at 12 p.m. (MT). Back in Colorado, redshirt junior Pablo Lomeli is set to represent the Mountain Lions in the 10,000m at Colorado School of Mines' Kit Mayer Classic with the event starting at 7:45 p.m. from the Stermole Track & Field Complex in Golden, Colo.
