Softball Drops Two Games in Battle Versus Cougars

LAKEWOOD, Colo. –  The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team dropped two more games versus Colorado Christian University this afternoon after the CCU offense came alive.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final: Game 1: CCU 9, UCCS 1 (5 innings) | Game 2: CCU 10, UCCS 2 (5 innings)
Records: UCCS (7-9, 2-5) , CCU (12-6, 8-0)
Location: All Star Park | Lakewood, Colo.
All-Time Series: CCU leads the all-time series 27-14 after today's games and have won 14 consecutive games against the Mountain Lions.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME ONE

  • Starting pitcher for CCU, Elyse McMullin, made quick work of the top of the order for UCCS sitting down the first three batters. When the Cougars took the batters box, they got things going with one out when two singles put runners on first and second. After an out at third on a fielders choice, and runners still on first and second, Danae Lopez punched an RBI single through the infield scoring one and leaving runners on the corner. The next batter, Peyton Marvel, would double into right center scoring another before the next batter would fly out.
  • Down 2-0 to begin the top of the second, the Mountain Lions were stalled as their efforts to score were shut down. A Tayler McCombs double was the only hit and baserunner they could manage. CCU continued to add to their lead in the bottom of the second when they found the bases loaded with only one out. Rachel Williams hit a single that scored two runners and left herself on first with another runner on second. UCCS found a way to get out of the inning down 4-0 after CCU stranded three.
  • The Mountain Lions found some momentum in the top of the third down 4-0 when the first two batters successfully found base after two walks. Nothing would come of it though as the next three were retired. CCU would once again add two more runs to their lead to make it 6-0 at the end of the inning. McMullin would record an RBI sacrifice grounder and Rachel Williams gets the other RBI for the inning with a single.
  • Tayler McCombs singled to right field and was driven in by Laynee Case when she hit a massive double to left center. This made the score 6-1 as UCCS started to gain some momentum. The Mountain Lions would struggle to get another baserunner and the top of the fourth would end there.
  • The offensive consistency from CCU was still on display as two more runs would score in the bottom half of the fourth. An error would have one score making it 7-1 before a Camryn Quilling walk scored another as the loaded bases pushed one home.
  • Another quiet top half of the inning for UCCS resulted in a seven run deficit headed to the bottom of the fifth. The game would end there in the bottom of the fifth as CCU scored a run on a Mia Stankiewicz bunt for a hit.

STATS FROM GAME ONE

  • Elyse McMullin grabs win number three for herself this year at with an overall (3-2) record. As for UCCS, Autumn Kunze claims the loss now (2-4) overall on the season.
  • UCCS was held to just three hits while CCU let them rain with 15. They added another five base runners though five walks while UCCS only drew two.
  • All nine starters on offense for CCU reached base successfully at least once with all but one recording a hit.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME TWO

  • UCCS got off to a nice start with runners on first and second with no outs, but a strikeout and double play would send them to the field to hopefully do the same. Starting pitcher Hannah Hunt made quick work of the top of the lineup retiring three of four to quickly send the game to the second inning.
  • The game was 0-0 as the top of the second began and Tayler McCombs ripped a stinger down the line and made her way around for a triple. Laynee Case would ground out as the next batter but not before McCombs crossed home. Halley Redd would rock one over the fence for a solo shot to make the Mountain Lion lead two runs at the end of the top of the second. Mia Stankiewicz of CCU was the only hit of the bottom half but it just so happened to be a huge solo home run to make the score 2-1 in favor of UCCS.
  • The third brought three consecutive outs for the Mountain Lion offense and when CCU came up to bat, they wouldn't trail the game much longer. Cheyenne Stark hit a triple to left center as the leadoff batter for the inning. She scored on a wild pitch ball for the next batter to tie the game up 2-2. Another walk would put runners on first and second for Rachel Williams who delivered with a double that scored both runners on base. A Danae Lopez single would then score Williams making it 5-2. When it looked like the damage had been done, Peyton Marvel hit a home run that scored herself and Lopez and ultimately ending the inning with a 7-2 lead.
  • UCCS couldn't get anything going in the top of the fourth with the only hit being a Katie Steinmetz single. CCU on the other hand looked like they were going to be stopped in the bottom of the fourth, but a Leah Garcia two run shot to left field would make the game 9-2 headed to the fifth.
  • CCU kept their foot on the gas with three more outs in the first four batters to go into the bottom of fifth needing one run to end the game.
  • UCCS would force two quick outs in the bottom of the fifth, but then Cheyenne stark was hit by a pitch to give the Cougars a free baserunner. The very next batter Elyse McMullin would be down to her last strike when she rocked a double into left center field scoring Stark and ending the game there 10-2 CCU.

STATS FROM GAME TWO

  • CCU scored 10 runs off of only seven hits meanwhile UCCS only got two across home plate off of five total hits.
  • Hannah Hunt was charged with the loss and moves to (5-2) on the season. Emma Duncan claimed the win for CCU improving her season long campaign to (4-2) overall.
  • Seven of nine starting batters for Colorado Christian University recorded hits in the win.
  • A triple and three home runs propelled the Cougar offense over the line versus the Mountain Lions.
