Mountain Lions Prevail Over Broncos 85-84

Box Score HILO, Hawaii – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team win a tight game in Hawaii 85-84 over the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos.

All-Time Series: UCCS and CPP met for the second time tonight, with CPP winning the first match up 70-48 on December 1st, 1995.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
  • The Mountain Lions earned the lead in the early going, embarking on a 23-19 run over the first ten minutes of play. Brody Hull led the charge with nine points for UCCS during the stretch. The Mountain Lions shot 8-16 over the first ten, with Mario Williams Jr. hitting the lone triple of the charge.
  • Both teams would match one another down the stretch with both sides scoring 17 over the final 9:48 of the first half. Seven Mountain Lions scored to construct the 17 UCCS points, with the Mountain Lions taking a four-point lead into the half 40-36.
  • The teams traded points out of the half time break, but Cal Poly Pomona began to make up ground on UCCS. The Broncos would take their first lead, and build it to as much as eight at 57-49. UCCS would battle back and reclaim the lead, as the Mountain Lions held the 61-58 lead midway through the second half.
  • Trey Lucia jumpstarted the final ten for UCCS with a triple, as UCCS began to pull away once again. The Broncos would not be denied as the would fight back to tie the game at 71 all, forcing UCCS into a timeout with 6:35 to play. The lead would bounce back between teams over the next few minutes as CPP would be first to reach the 80 point threshold thanks to a step back jumper from Demarreya Lewis-Cooper to make it 81-79. The final three minutes would feature three lead changes, but clutch free throws from Jezza McKenzie with five second left would win it for UCCS, as the Mountain Lions would prevail 85-84.

STATS FROM THE GAME
 
  • Mario Williams Jr. led UCCS with 16 points, just ahead of Brody Hull with 15. Malcolm Bell led all scorers with 18 for CPP.
  • UCCS did well to stay out of foul trouble, as Xavier Martinez was the only Mountain Lion to reach three fouls.
  • The Mountain Lions took care of the ball in the islands, with CPP committing six more turnovers than UCCS 17-11.

  • This is UCCS' first game decided by a single possession on the season.
