Mountain Lions Add Four Provisional Marks on Day Two of Mines Alumni Classic

GOLDEN, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs track & field team added four NCAA provisional qualifying marks on day two of the Mines Alumni Classic on Saturday in Golden, Colo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Nigel James put together a strong day in the men's 60m hurdles as he opened the competition with a converted time of 8.39s that was good for sixth overall in the preliminary round and qualified him for the final. In the final race, James elevated to new heights as he posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8.10c to earn a second-place finish. His personal best raw time of 8.08s also moved him into third all-time in program history for the event.
  • Each of the three Mountain Lions competing in the preliminary round of the women's 60m hurdles qualified for the final with sophomore Krissie Sanders posting the second-fastest time in the field at a personal best time of 8.86c while being joined by junior Abigail Frey (9.06c) and redshirt junior Gigi Douillard (9.80c) in the third and sixth positions, respectively. In the final, Sanders continued to lead the way for UCCS as she improved to an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8.79s to finish second overall. Frey crossed the line just behind Sanders in third place with a collegiate personal best time of 8.99c, while Douillard raced to a sixth-place finish in a personal best time of 9.58c.
  • The Mountain Lions had three student-athletes advance through the preliminary round of the men's 60m dash with senior Kymani Sterling posting the top time in the group at an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 6.76c. Redshirt senior Richard Safoh posted a personal best time of 6.93c to take the second position in the prelim field, while junior Willie Tran posted the seventh-fastest time in the field at 6.97c. Sterling would withdraw from the final race, opening up the opportunity for Safoh to sprint to a first place finish in the event at another personal best time of 6.87c. He was followed across the line by Tran, who also recorded an improved time of 6.92c to finish in fourth place.
  • In the women's 60m dash, four UCCS student-athletes made their way through the preliminary round with senior Victoria Farinas posting a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.52s while being joined in the final field by redshirt junior Madissyn Moore (7.76c), sophomore Danaya Kinnard (7.78c) and sophomore Zane Bullock (7.84c). In the final, Farinas paced the Mountain Lions as she finished second overall with a time of 7.57c while Kinnard (7.73c), Bullock (7.81c), and Moore (7.84c) secured the fifth, sixth, and seventh positions, respectively.
  • UCCS claimed three of the top four spots in the men's weight throw with senior Luke Hard leading the way in second place with a mark of 17.97m. Junior Michael Roberts finished just behind Hard in third place with a personal best toss of 17.91m, while sophomore Hayden Cuevas also established a new personal best in the event with a fourth-place mark of 16.88m.
  • Junior Kathryn Carroll had an impressive showing in the women's triple jump as she posted a personal best mark of 11.61m to finish first overall in the competition. A pair of freshmen also made their collegiate debuts in the event with Payton Rodgers finishing second overall at 11.32m and Sophia Bowser taking fifth place at 10.60m.
  • The Mountain Lions had the only two competitors in the men's triple jump and freshman Realiti Smith led the way in his collegiate debut in the event as he jumped to a mark of 14.26m. Redshirt freshman JJ Nsubuga was also in action, posting a leap of 12.89m.
  • After posting a strong effort in the shot put last night, junior Savannah Jorgens returned to the ring in the women's weight throw on Saturday and put forth another personal best performance as she went on to finish third overall with a mark of 16.61m.  
  • In the men's high jump, junior KJ McInnis finished in second place as he cleared a bar height of 2.00m. Sophomore Dallis Robinson was the lone Mountain Lion in action in the women's high jump, where she finished seventh overall with a mark of 1.50m.
BEYOND THE RESULTS
  • UCCS recorded updates to the top five lists in the indoor record book for five different events on day two of the Mines Alumni Classic, including the women's 60m dash, men's and women's 60m hurdles, and men's and women's weight throw.
  • In their opening weekend of competition, the Mountain Lions notched nine NCAA provisional qualifying marks, including five on the men's side and four on the women's side.

  • The Mountain Lions will host their first home meet of the indoor season next week with the Colorado Running Company Pre-Holiday Invite & Multi set to take place on Friday, Dec. 13 and Saturday, Dec. 14 inside the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse.
