COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team played a tightly contested four-set match against Colorado State University Pueblo Friday night inside Gallogly Events Center, dropping a decisive set three 40-38 and losing the match 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The ThunderWolves made a statement in set one, opening to a 23-12 lead to start Friday night's match. The Mountain Lions fought to end the set, though, going on a 7-1 run to make the score 24-19. CSUP then finished it off, winning set one 25-19. The ThunderWolve's size and defensive ability were evident in set one, collecting five blocks to UCCS' zero.
- Set two saw the Mountain Lions respond, forgetting the loss in set one. Back-to-back kills from Payton Tompkins would give UCCS a 12-8 early lead. CSUP would respond immediately with a 5-1 run, evening it up at 13 apiece. The ThunderWolves held a 21-20 lead late, but Tompkins and Emily Pruitt would help the Mountain Lions close on a 5-1 run to win set two 25-22. UCCS and CSUP played evenly through set two. Still, the Mountain Lions gained the advantage in kills, recording 15 to their 13 and compiling a hit percentage of .196 to their .152.
- The ThunderWolves opened set three in total control, immediately gaining a commanding 20-13 lead. UCCS dug deep and exploded from there, rattling off an 11-2 run and taking a 24-22 lead with one point to go to take a 2-1 advantage. CSUP did their job to keep the set going, scoring the following two points and extending the set further. The two teams then traded points back and forth, extending the set to a 36-36 tie. A ThunderWolves kill put them up one (37-36), but Tompkins and the Mountain Lions replied with two consecutive points, taking a 38-37 lead. CSUP remained determined and closed the high-scoring set with three straight kills, winning 40-38 to take a decisive 2-1 match lead. The high-scoring set saw the ThunderWolves record 78 attacks with 27 kills, and the Mountain Lions tally 72 attacks and 24 kills.
- With nearly all momentum gone from the previous grueling set, UCCS refused to roll over. The Mountain Lions led late in set four, 20-18, looking to force a fifth set. CSUP remained determined, though, scoring six straight to go up 24-20. Sydnee Walker stopped the scoring streak with a kill, but the ThunderWolves would score the match-deciding point on the next serve, winning set four 25-21 and the match 3-1.
MATCH STATISTICS
- Tompkins led things for the Mountain Lions with 21 points, 18 kills, 60 total attacks, and a hit percentage of .183. The freshman also recorded two total blocks, nine digs, and a service ace.
- UCCS also saw kills from Pruitt (13), Walker (10), Rylee Pitts (seven), Maylen Mitrovich (six), Avrey Keim (five), and Avery Ahlers (two).
- Audrey Dowd and Mitrovich served as the leading setters for UCCS tonight, tallying 29 and 20 assists, respectively. Along with her assists Dowd led the team in service aces with three.
- CSUP bested UCCS in kills (70-61), hit percentage (.204-.175), assists (66-57), service aces (6-5), total blocks (12-7), and digs (91-84).
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Tonight's third set was the fourth time UCCS has historically been involved in a set reaching 40 points, moving to 2-2 all-time in 40-point sets. The last time UCCS won a 40-point set was on Oct. 12, 2007, in a 40-38 win over Colorado Mesa University.
- UCCS' 194 total attacks are a new team season high, and their 61 kills and 57 assists are both season highs in four sets.
- Mackenzie Ransom's 26 digs mark a new career and season-high for the junior libero.
- Tompkins' 60 attacks tonight mark a new season for a Mountain Lion this year and a career-high for the outside hitter.
- The Mountain Lions have lost 10 straight matches to the ThunderWolves since Oct. 19, 2019. Their last win over CSUP occurred on Oct. 5, 2018, when they swept the ThunderWolves in Pueblo, Colo.
