HOW IT HAPPENED
- Saturday afternoon's season finale saw the Mountain Lions and Grizzlies start 15-14, with ASU on top. The Grizzlies then pulled away on a 5-2 run, taking a 20-16 lead. Kills from Sydnee Walker and Rylee Pitts helped propel UCCS on a 5-0 run to retake the lead (21-20) and apply pressure on ASU. The Grizzlies refused to let the Mountain Lions pull out a win in set one, finishing on a 7-4 run, winning 27-25. ASU's size was a factor in set one as they recorded six blocks to UCCS' zero.
- The Mountain Lions provided little resistance to the Grizzlies at the start of set two. UCCS had a deficit of 5-1 early and took a timeout in response. ASU applied its force after the break, bringing their lead to seven (12-5). The Mountain Lions responded to the adversity, erupting to a 9-0 run with kills from Payton Tompkins, Pitts, and a service ace from Avrey Keim. UCCS didn't let up from there, closing set two on an 11-6 run, winning 25-18 and evening the match at 1-1. The impressive set two win was fueled by the Grizzlies attack errors (10) and the Mountain Lion's defense, holding ASU to a hit percentage of .000.
- UCCS opened set three with a comfortable 22-16 lead, looking to take a 2-1 match advantage. ASU had other plans and would score the following six points unanswered, evening the score at 22. From there, the Grizzlies bested the Mountain Lions, finishing set three on top 28-26, going up 2-1 in the match. UCCS's defense did not have the same impact in set three as in the second. The Mountain Lions allowed the Grizzlies to a hit percentage of .275 with 15 kills on 40 attempts.
- Set four saw UCCS and ASU play neck and neck to a 16-15 advantage for the Mountain Lions. Kills from Audrey Dowd and Tompkins drove UCCS to a 4-0 run to take a five-point lead (20-15). The Grizzlies tallied a few points, but the Mountain Lions were determined to push the match to a fifth set, winning set four 25-21.
- The deciding set of the match began with both teams trading blows. The Grizzlies would bring themselves down one (5-4) early on. The Mountain Lions followed with a kill from Emily Pruitt and a service ace from Mackenzie Ransom. They gained a point off an attack error from ASU to grow their lead to 8-4. The Grizzlies refused to go out quietly and would go on a 9-5 run to even the score at 13 apiece. Determined to end the season on a high note, Pruitt and Pitts collected the final two kills for UCCS, winning 15-13 and the match 3-2. The Mountain Lions were focused in set five, recording a hit percentage of .471 and throwing down 11 kills in the process.
