Women’s Golf Wraps Up 11th Place at San Marcos Shootout

TEMECULA, Calif. – Emily Shimkus recorded a top-20 finish to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team at the San Marcos Shootout, hosted by California State University San Marcos at Temecula Creek Inn Golf Course in Temecula, Calif.  The Mountain Lions shaved three strokes off of yesterday's round to finish the tournament with a 653 (+77) after posting scores of 328 and 325.

FROM THE TEE
  • Shimkus mirrored yesterday's round of 78 with another 78 today, placing in a tie for 15th overall with a 156. Shimkus, who was the only Mountain Lion to place in the top half of the tournament field, tallied 13 pars today and added a birdie.  She carded a 37 (+1) on the back, featuring a -1 in her first six holes on the back nine.
  • Kaya Kshatriya made the biggest leap for UCCS, shooting five strokes better today than yesterday.  Kshatriya's 78 today brought her total to 161 for the tournament and a T36 place finish.  She sank a birdie on each half of the course to post a team high three birdies in the two rounds.
  • Olivia Florence and Rachel Penzenstadler completed the scoring for UCCS.  Florence carded an 82 today, notching a +5 on each half to close the tournament with a 166.  Penzenstadler rattled off seven pars today as part of her 88, notching a 171 in two days to claim a tie for 55th place.
  • Just outside of scoring for the Mountain Lions is Samantha Saile.  Saile's 176 (+32) scorecard featured an 89 on Monday and an 87 today.
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • Simon Fraser University claimed the team title and held on to yesterday's lead to shoot a 610 (300, 310) for the tournament, besting all 11 teams.
  • PLU's Alli Kim also maintained her lead from the opening round to win individual honors with a two-over par 146.
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • SFU's opening round of 300 on Monday proved to be the lowest round by any team in the tournament. 
  • As a team, the Mountain Lions were tied for eighth place in par 5 scoring (5.50, +20).  Their 3.50 (+20) scoring mark on par 3 holes was tied for the ninth best, while their par 4 score was 11th overall (4.70, +70).
  • UCCS tied for ninth overall in birdies (eight) and 80 pars was the 10th most in the field.
  • The Mountain Lions tournament score of 653 is their highest score this year in 36-hole tournaments.
  • Shimkus posted top-10 finishes in pars (T3, 25) and par 5 scoring (T7, 5.00).
 
UP NEXT
  • The Mountain Lions will play in their final tournament of the regular season April 3-4 at the West Texas A&M University Desert Invitational, held in Tucson, Ariz. at the Lodge at Ventana Canyon.
