Women’s Golf Finishes Day One of DBU Invitational in 14th Place

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Competing against eight nationally ranked Division I, II and III teams, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team fired off a 657 (+43) in two rounds of the Dallas Baptist University Poppy Hills Patriot Invitational on Monday.  The three round tournament is being held at Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach, Calif.

FROM THE TEE
  • Pacing the Mountain Lions after two rounds are Olivia Florence and Emily Shimkus who are tied for 42nd place with a 15-over par 157.  Shimkus carded two birdies and nine pars in the opening round as part of her 79, before taking one stroke off in round two to card a 78 behind nine pars and one birdie as she posted a one-over par on the back nine of round two.  Two of Florence's three birdies were notched in round one, while 10 of her 16 pars on the day came in round two.
  • Kaya Kshatriya was consistent in both rounds, shooting an 83 through both sets of 18 and is currently tied for 67th place.  She hit on 14 pars for the day with eight of them coming in round one.
  • Bringing in the Mountain Lions' scorers on Monday is Samantha Saile.  Saile carded an 88 in round one and added one more stroke in round two to bring her total to +35 177, putting her in 77th place overall.
  • Rachel Penzenstadler is eight strokes behind Saile and holds down 81st place after entering a 96 and 89 in each round.
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • No. 33 California State University East Bay is on top of the 15-team tournament field, owning a +10 578.  CSU East Bay is one stroke ahead of host school and No. 2 ranked DBU (579).
  • Three golfers lead all 81 competitors after recording a two-round score of 141 (-1): Julika Grosspietsch (CSUEB), Alli Kim of Point Loma, and Dartmouth's Katherine Sung.
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • Through two rounds, UCCS is 12th in the field in Par 5 scoring (5.53, +21), and 14th in both Par 3 scoring (3.70, +35) and Par 4 scoring (4.84, +76).
  • As a team, the Mountain Lions have complied 70 pars and eight birdies.
  • Shimkus is tied for the 40th most pars after hitting 18.  She joins Florence in a tie for the 34th most birdies (three).
 
UP NEXT
  • Round three of the Poppy Hills Patriot Invite will begin Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. (MT).
