Shimkus Holds Individual Lead after Round One of SMSU Spring Classic

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – Junior Emily Shimkus is the individual leader after round one of the Southwest Minnesota State University Spring Classic, held in Litchfield Park, Ariz.  Shimkus carded a 73 on Monday as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team posted a team score 323 in their first round of the spring season, placing them in fourth place out of eight teams.

FROM THE TEE
  • Shimkus finished the opening round with a strong performance on the back half of the course where she drained three of her four birdies on the day for an even par 36 on the back nine. 
  • Kaya Kshatriya punched in an 82 in round one and is in a tie for 15th place overall.  She tallied a birdie on each half of the course with five of her eight pars on the day coming on the back nine.
  • Sitting one stroke and one place behind Kshatriya is Samantha Saile with an 83.  Saile sunk a birdie on par 5 No. 8 and added another par 5 birdie two holes later.
  • Olivia Florence wrapped up day one with an 85, putting her in a tie for 26th place.  Florence started the day with a birdie on her first hole (No. 1), but finished the front nine with a five-over par 41.
  • Rachel Penzenstadler notched a 94 to finish round one in a tie for 44th place.
  • Competing as individuals in the SMSU Spring Classic, Eliana Vigil is tied for 33rd place with an 89 while Torri Leung is tied with Penzenstadler for 44th place (94).
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • Lehigh University posted a 311 today to lead the eight-team field, and they hold a 10-stroke lead over MSU Denver (321).
  • Shimkus' 73 is the top score in the 55-golfer field.  She is one stroke ahead of Lehigh's Yuki Zhu's 74.
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • As a team, the Mountain Lions registered the third most birdies (nine) and fourth most pars (37).
  • Shimkus is the tournament leader in par 3 scoring (3.33) and par 4 scoring (4.00).  She is tied for third in par 5 scoring (4.83) and has posted the second most birdies with four.

  • Round two of the SMSU Spring Classic will commence Tuesday morning.
