Historic Offensive Performance Lifts Men’s Soccer to 11-0 Victory Over Adams State

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –  The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team put together a historic offensive performance on Thursday evening at Mountain Lion Stadium as they set single game program records for both goals and points to defeat Adams State University by a score of 11-0.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: UCCS 11, ASU 0
Records: UCCS (4-1-2, 0-0-0 RMAC), ASU (0-7-0, 0-0-0 RMAC)
Facility: Mountain Lion Stadium | Colorado Springs, Colo.
All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions move to 17-2-1 all-time against the Grizzlies and extend their winning streak against ASU to four games dating back to Oct. 18, 2019.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Mountain Lions controlled Thursday evening's match from early in the first half as Cole Van Holland got the scoring started in the 7th minute with a header past ASU goalkeeper Logan Rabasca to make it a 1-0 advantage.
  • Just three minutes later, Lars Walczyk joined in on the action, taking a pass from Marvin Putu and scoring his third goal of the season to make it a 2-0 game in the tenth minute.
  • After assisting on the Mountain Lion's previous goal, Putu was back at it in the 15th minute, receiving a pass from Liam McGuire and firing into the back of the nylon to extend the UCCS lead to 3-0.
  • 30 seconds later, the roles were reversed with McGuire this time on the receiving end of a pass from Putu, and the Brown Deer, Wis. native tapped the ball with his right foot into the net to make it a 4-0 lead.
  • McGuire continued his strong evening in the 25th minute as he took a cross from a streaking Kolby Raineri and kicked it on the slide into the net for a 5-0 advantage.
  • The Mountain Lions weren't done scoring in the first half, as McGuire headed the ball off of a 43rd minute punt from UCCS goalkeeper Declan Domyan in the direction of the ASU goal for Raineri, who had a wide-open stretch of field to score his first goal of the evening and send UCCS to halftime ahead 6-0.
  • McGuire wasted little time completing the hat trick coming out of the halftime break as Raineri laid a line-drive pass inside the box just one minute into the second half that was headed into the goal by McGuire for a 7-0 lead.
  • In the 54th minute, Raineri gained possession of the ball at midfield and managed to beat his man as he drove towards the net, firing a strike into the nylon for his second goal of the evening and pushing the UCCS advantage to 8-0. Raineri would get on the board once again with his third goal of the match in the 69th minute, marking the Mountain Lion's program record ninth goal of the game.
  • The Mountain Lions made it an even ten goals in the 75th minute as Luka Cecic found Komil Khatamov on a crosser for his first goal of the season.
  • The scoring wrapped up in the 85th minute as Cecic added his second assist of the night in finding Duncan Cahill for a score and the Mountain Lions finished an 11-0 win over the Grizzlies.

STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • Raineri and McGuire paced the Mountain Lions with three goals apiece, while five other UCCS student-athletes, including Walczyk, Van Holland, Putu, Cahill, and Khatamov each scored one goal.
  • The Mountain Lions also recorded nine assists in the match, with McGuire, Putu and Cecic each recording two while Raineri, Vargas and Seminario each recorded one.
  • UCCS outshot ASU 32-8 and held decided advantages in shots on goal (21-2) and corner kicks (9-2).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Mountain Lions established new program highs with 11 goals and 31 total points. The previous highs of eight goals and 25 points last occurred on Oct. 8, 2010, against Adams State.
  • With McGuire and Raineri each recording hat tricks in the match, they become the 15th and 16th players in program history to accomplish the feat. Thursday evening's match also marks the first time in team history that two players have recorded a hat trick in the same game.
  • Raineri also moves into sole possession of fourth all-time in program history after adding seven shots on goal to his career tally of 64. With nine total shots, he also moves into sole possession of tenth place all-time for total shots with 117 in his career.
  • With eight points on the evening off three goals and two assists, McGuire ties the all-time mark for points in a single game. The two assists also marked the 13th and 14th assists of his career, moving him into fourth-place all-time in program history in the category.
  • Having recorded their fifth team shutout of the season, UCCS ties for the ninth most shutouts in a single season despite having 11 more regular season matches remaining on the schedule.
  • The UCCS men's soccer program received national attention this week as they received votes in the United Soccer Coaches Week 2 National Rankings Poll. The Mountain Lions also moved up one spot in the USC Week 2 Regional Rankings, claiming the No. 8 spot in the South Central Region.
