THORNTON, Colo. – Competing in their first tournament of the season, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team recorded a 942 in the three-round Colorado Christian University Swan Memorial tournament, held at Todd Creek Golf Club in Thornton, Colo. The Mountain Lions shot a 309 today, marking a 10-stroke improvement over Monday's opening round (319, 314, 309).

FROM THE TEE
- Emily Shimkus and Olivia Florence paced the Mountain Lions in the opening tournament. Shimkus shot her lowest round of the tournament today (75) to finish tied for 19th overall with a 232. Florence was just one stroke behind Shimkus (233) and placed in a tie for 24th behind rounds of 78, 78 and 77.
- Shimkus drained two birdies today on par 5 No. 14 and par 5 No. 4. Starting the day on No. 7, she shot a one-over par on the back nine and strung together nine straight holes with eight pars and a birdie.
- Florence closed out the back nine with a birdie on par 5 No. 18. After shooting five-over par on the back nine, she hit par on every hole on the front nine.
- Rachel Penzenstadler's 241 placed her in a tie for 43rd overall. Penzenstadler made the largest improvement from the opening round to today's final round, saving eight strokes off her card (85, 79, 77). She brought her tournament total to five birdies after hitting three this morning, including two straight birdies on No. 14 and No. 15. She put together a series of 13 straight holes shooting two-under par.
- Bringing in the Mountain Lions scorers was Samantha Saile's 243. Saile finished round three with an 85 to finish 48 overall. Just one stroke behind Saile was Mackenzie Fontana who tied for 49th overall with a 244 (83, 81, 80).
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
- Colorado Christian held onto their lead after the first two rounds to win the 16-team tournament. The Mountain Lions shot a 305 today and posted a three-round score of 903 to win the title by four strokes over Midwestern State University.
- The Mustangs' Tristan Gabbard finished with a two-over par 218 to win the individual title.
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
- Florence, Fontana and Penzenstadler finished the tournament with five birdies each. Penzenstadler led the Mountain Lions in the final round with three birdies.
- Shimkus' 35 pars were tied for the fourth most in the field.
- The Mountain Lions made 146 pars in the three rounds, the sixth most out of 16 teams.
- UCCS strongest shooting was on Par 5 holes, averaging a score of 5.03.
UP NEXT
- The Mountain Lions will return to the course Sept. 25-17 when they head to South Jordan, Utah for the Westminster Wasatch Invitational.
