Mountain Lions Tied for Eighth after Two Rounds

THORNTON, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team is sitting in the middle of the pack after their first action of the 2022-23 season.  The Mountain Lions are tied for eighth place with a 633 (319, 314) at the 2022 Colorado Christian University Swan Memorial, held at Todd Creek Golf Club in Thornton, Colo.

FROM THE TEE
  • Three strokes separate the top three scorers for the Mountain Lions.  Olivia Florence leads UCCS and is tied for 22nd overall after carding a 78 in the first and second rounds (156) of Monday's action.  Florence started the morning on hole No. 7 and hit four straight pars before sinking her first birdie on par 5 No. 14.  She chipped in three more birdies in the second round, including back-to-back birdies on the 13th (par 4) and 14th (par 5) holes.
  • Emily Shimkus is five spots behind Florence owning a 157 (77, 80).  She finished the first round making par on her final eight holes, and then proceeded to make eight of nine pars to close out the second round.
  • Samantha Saile carded an 81 in the first round that featured nine pars and a birdie on hole No. 14 (par 5).  She improved by four strokes in round two after sinking 11 of her 12 last holes for par.
  • Mackenzie Fontana and Rachel Penzenstadler finished Monday with a 164 and are tied for 54th place.  Fontana notched an 83 in the opening round and finished with an 81 in round two.  She went two-over par in the second round with birdies on par 5 No. 18 and No. 4.  Penzenstadler recorded a birdie in each round and chopped off six strokes in round two (85, 79).
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • Host team Colorado Christian leads the 16-team field.  The Cougars fired off a 598 on Monday, including a tournament low 293 in the second round.  CCU leads second place Midwestern State University by 12 strokes.
  • Madison Voisand of Biola and Morgan Brasser of Fort Hays State University lead the 89-golfer field with a 146.
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • Shimkus is tied for the third most pars in the field with 24.
  • UCCS is tied for third place with the most pars (97).
  • The Mountain Lions have 10 birdies through two rounds.
  • UCCS is shooting a 5.10 on par 5s.

  • The third and final round will begin Tuesday morning.
