Baroth, Kreil Lead Mountain Lions in Opening Round of RMAC Championship

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Julia Baroth and Dakotah Kreil carded a one-under par 71 Sunday afternoon in the opening round of the 2022 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champions Tournament, leading the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team to a first-round score of 300.  The first round of the championship tournament will be completed tomorrow morning as the round was suspended due to darkness.  With 10 of the 12 teams having completed the first 18 holes, the Mountain Lions are currently in second place and just one stroke behind the tournament leader Colorado Christian University.

FROM THE TEE
  • Baroth and Kreil each knocked in 13 pars and three birdies while shooting a one-under par 35 on the front nine as part of their 71 score and are currently tied for second place.  Baroth chipped in a birdie on holes No. 5, 7 and 18, while Kreil hit back-to-back birdies on holes No. 7 and 8, followed by a birdie on par three hole No. 16.
  • All three of Emily Shimkus' birdies came on the front nine.  Shimkus, who is tied for seventh place, opened the tournament shooting a 75, including a birdie on her first hole of the day off hole No. 1.  Shimkus, who drained 10 pars today, also sunk birdies on hole No. 4 and No. 9.
  • Closing up the Mountain Lions scorers from day one is Samantha Saile with an 83.  Saile was one of four Mountain Lions to register three birdies today, with all three coming in the last six holes (No. 13, No. 14, No. 18). Heading into the complete of the first round, Saile is sitting in a tie for 36th place.
  • Just outside of the Mountain Lions top scorer's is Jordyn Allen with an 85.  Allen chipped in five pars and two birdies in her first RMAC Championship Tournament.
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • Only one stroke ahead of the Baroth and Kreil for the individual lead is MSU Denver's Isabel Botero with a two-under par 70.
  • CCU leads all 12 teams with an 11-over par 299.
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • Today's opening round of 300 is tied for the third best round of the season, and just two strokes off the season best round of 298, recorded on Oct. 18 at the FLC Nick Turner Invite.
  • Baroth's and Kreil's round of 71 today is tied for the second lowest round by any Mountain Lion this season.
 
UP NEXT
  • The final two teams will wrap up the last holes of round one beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday.  Round two will begin with UCCS teeing off at 11:24 a.m.
