GOLDEN, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team surged past Angelo State University in the first round of the NCAA Regional Tournament on Friday as the Mountain Lions took down the Rambelles 3-1 in overtime to advance to the second round of the national tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• It was a physical opening 45 minutes with UCCS and ASU refusing to allow a shot through in the first half. The Mountain Lions notched a total of seven shots including a shot on goal from
Fie Steenberg and
Kelsey Takahashi as UCCS owned the offensive momentum heading into the intermission.
• In the second half, the Mountain Lion attack went right back at the Rambelles backline with Angelo State eventually folding in the 60
th minute. After
Jadyn LeDoux fired a shot inside the left post that ASU's Kira Miller made a diving save on, Steenberg garnered possession and drew a foul for a penalty kick that the sophomore netted for the 1-0 UCCS lead.
• With the 1-0 lead in hand, UCCS was able to keep the Rambelles at bay until late in the half where Angelo State found their opening at the 87:45 mark with ASU's sixth corner of the game leading to the 1-1 equalizer. ASU's Mia Czarnecki sent a bending shot off the corner to the far post that
Kaitlin Hinkle nearly saved as the match went into overtime.
• The first overtime period was all UCCS with the Mountain Lions continuing to pile on the shots after mounting four shots and three shots on goal on Miller and the Rambelles but ASU kept the tie in place through the first overtime period.
• But in the second period of overtime, UCCS piled it on Angelo State as the Mountain Lions charged down the pitch in the 104
th minute with LeDoux finding an open
Kaitlin Hinkle near the right side of the box who connected with
Makayla Merlo who sent a perfectly placed shot in the top net for the go-ahead 2-1 lead.
• The Mountain Lions were not yet finished as a
Fabiola Estrada feed to LeDoux down the field led where the sophomore threaded a shot inside the right post at the 104:47 mark for the 3-1 final.
STATS FROM THE DAY:
• UCCS outshot ASU 17-11 in the contest with the Mountain Lions holding the advantage in shots on goal, 10-6. The Rambelles came to hold the advantage in corner kicks, 6-3.
• Jadyn LeDoux paced both teams in shots and shots on goal as she posted five shots with four shots on frame along with a game-high three points on one goal and an assist.
Fie Steenberg landed both of her shots on frame and netted her PK for two points as
Makayla Merlo registered three shots and one shot on goal while notching the game-winning goal for two points.
Kaitlin Hinkle and
Fabiola Estrada joined in on the fun by recording an assist each.
• Alexis Walker comes away with five saves as she improves to 14-3-4.
• Jade Kinsey,
Makayla Merlo and
Zoe Sims each played the full 110 minutes on Friday.
BEYOND THE BOX:
• Both
Makayla Merlo and
Jadyn LeDoux netted their 15
th career goal to tie for the 10
th most in program history.
• The Mountain Lions have now reached the second round of the NCAA Regional Tournament in all five years the Mountain Lions have qualified.
• Both of UCCS' program wins against Angelo State have been decided in overtime in the NCAA Tournament.
• UCCS is 2-0-1 in NCAA Tournament games that have gone into overtime.
