INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: #10 CSM 2, UCCS 2
Records: UCCS (7-2-4, 4-1-2 RMAC), CSM (9-1-3, 6-0-2 RMAC)
Location: Mountain Lion Stadium | Colorado Springs, Colo.
Series: UCCS trails Colorado School of Mines 7-16-2 in the all-time series with Sunday's match marking the programs' first draw since Oct. 26, 2012.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Mountain Lions came out and put the Orediggers in a position they weren't used to in the opening minutes with
Abby Barhydt finding
Kaitlin Hinkle on the far sideline who took off down the field and finished off the play with a five-yard chip shot at 3:49 for the 1-0 Mountain Lion lead.
• In the ninth minute, UCCS kept their foot on the pedal and went right back at the Orediggers' backline with the Barhydt to Hinkle connection putting the No. 10 team in the country in a 2-0 hole. Barhydt worked her way down the far sideline and provided a center ball that Hinkle corralled and buried in net at the 8:06 mark.
• UCCS came out fast and furious in the first 10 minutes, but Colorado School of Mines worked their way back in the match by netting the third goal of the first half after a foul in the box led to an Oredigger penalty kick that Jordan Barnhart successfully netted to cut the deficit in half in the 22
nd minute.
• The remainder of the half saw three more Oredigger shots, but the Mountain Lion backline held strong to carry the 2-1 lead into the locker room.
• Out of the intermission, it was CSM who landed the first two shots of the half on frame with
Alexis Walker matching both shots with two saves to hold onto the one score advantage.
• At 58:22, the Orediggers came to break through with the equalizer after a well-placed corner kick resulted in a Barnhart header in the top right corner of net, making it 2-2.
• With the match all square, both attacks once again commenced but neither defense would give up another score for the rest of the half after seven Mountain Lion shots and four Oredigger missed nylon, including an early 86
th minute missile that came off the right foot of
Sydney Lasater and just grazed the top woodwork from atop the box to leave the game at a 2-2 draw.
STATS FROM THE DAY:
• UCCS slightly trailed CSM in shots, 16-12, and shots on goal, 6-5.
