Mountain Lions Card 649 on First Day of West Regional Preview

DALLAS, Texas – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team opened their second tournament of the fall season with a 649 on Monday at the West Regional Preview, hosted by Dallas Baptist University at the Golf Club of Dallas.  The Mountain Lions are sitting in 16th place after the first two rounds (328, 321).

FROM THE TEE
  • Emily Shimkus drained 13 pars in the first round on her way to a 79.  She cut off four strokes in the second round behind 11 pars and two birdies on par 4 holes 12 and 15.  Shimkus is pacing UCCS with a 154 and is tied for 37th.
  • After opening the day with an 84, Olivia Florence bounced back in round two and improved by eight strokes.  She hit four pars on each half of the course in round one before bettering her performance in the second round with 13 pars and a birdie on No. 2.  Florence, who is tied for 67th with a 160, shot a plus-one on the back nine in today's second round.
  • Competing in her first collegiate tournament, Kaya Kshatriya boasted 11 pars in the first round, including a plus-one on the front nine and a birdie on No. 14 on her way to a 76.   Four of her five pars in the second round came on the back nine.  Kshatriya is tied for 80th with a 165 (76, 87).
  • The fourth Mountain Lion in scoring position is Rachel Penzenstadler who carded a 171 today (87, 84) and is currently in 84th place.  She tallied 15 pars today, nine of which came in round one. 
  • Just five strokes behind Penzenstadler is Samantha Saile in 89th place.  Saile notched 14 pars today on her way to a 177 (91, 86)
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • Leading the 16-team tournament is host team Dallas Baptist University.  DBU opened the morning with a three-under par 285 before shooting a 290 in the second round to bring their total to one-under par 575. 
  • Julia Garza of DBU is leading all 89 golfers with a 139.  Garza shot a seven-under par 65 in round one followed by a 74 in round two.
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • The West Regional Preview features four Top-25 teams: No. 1 Dallas Baptist, No. 10 West Texas A&M, No. 19 St. Mary's University, and No. 25 Oklahoma Christian University.  Seven more teams are also receiving votes in the WGCA Division II poll.
  • Shimkus' 75 in the second round ties for the lowest round by a Mountain Lion this season (also recorded by Shimkus).  Her 24 pars today are tied for the sixth most in the field.
  • Florence's 76 in round two is her best round of the season.
  • UCCS finished today with 90 pars and eight birdies.
 
UP NEXT
  • The final round will be a shotgun start on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. (MT).
