Mountain Lions Finish Third at CSUP Invitational

PUEBLO, Colo. – Emily Shimkus posted a fifth-place finish Tuesday afternoon to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team to a third place finish at the Colorado State University Pueblo Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational, held at the Pueblo Country Club in Pueblo, Colo.  UCCS carded a 325 in today's round to complete the 36-hole tournament with a 632.

FROM THE TEE
  • Shimkus drained two birdies today on holes No. 4 and 12 while sinking four pars on each half of the course.  Her 79 today brought her tournament score to 152.
  • Earning second place for the Mountain Lions and tied for 10th overall was Kaya Kshatriya who posted an 81 today behind nine pars.  Kshatriya notched a two-round score of 158 behind 21 pars and a birdie.
  • Rachel Penzenstadler finished three strokes behind Kshatriya with a 161 after notching an 83 today.  She tallied a birdie on par 5 hole No. 14 and hit par seven times today.
  • Matching her score from yesterday and moving into the final scoring spot for the Mountain Lions is Olivia Florence.  Florence posted an 82 each day to place in a tie for 24th overall with a 164.
  • Samantha Saile led the Mountain Lions this tournament with three birdies.  After sinking back-to-back birdies on Monday, she made another one today on No. 13.  Saile posted a two-round scoring of 165 (79, 86) to finish 26th.
  • Competing as individuals at the CSUP individual were freshmen Eliana Vigil and Torri Leung.  Vigil tied for 42nd overall with a score of 170 (82, 88), edging Leung by one stroke (44th place) who carded an 81 and 90.
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • CSU Pueblo kept their lead from Monday's round to win the 10-team tournament.  The ThunderWolves added seven strokes to yesterday's round but won the tournament by 21 strokes over second place Colorado Mesa University.  The Pack totaled 605 over two rounds (299, 306) and were led by individual medalist Zoey Rodriguez with a two-over par 146.
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • The Mountain Lions recorded the second most pars in the tournament (92) and had the second best Par 4 scoring average (4.33).  Their 5.32 average on Par 5s was the third highest in the field.
  • Individually, Shimkus led the tournament in Par 5 scoring (4.70), tallied the second most pars (22), and tied for fourth n Par 4 scoring (4.31).
  • Behind a team high three birdies, Saile tied for eighth overall in Park 4 scoring with a 4.38 average.
  • Kshatriya's 21 pars tied for the fourth most pars in the two rounds, while Vigil's 3.40 average on Par 3s was the seventh best score.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Mountain Lions will compete in their final tournament of the fall season when they travel to Albuquerque, N.M. on Oct. 17-18 for the Fort Lewis College Nick Turner Invite.
