Women’s Golf Starts Strong at CSUP Farmers Insurance Invite

PUEBLO, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team is off to a strong start after the first day of the Colorado State University Pueblo Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational, held at the Pueblo Country Club in Pueblo, Colo.  The Mountain Lions are in second place in the 10-team tournament with a first-round score of 307.

FROM THE TEE
  • Emily Shimkus is leading the charge for the Mountain Lions and is just two strokes out of first place.  Sitting in second place out of 58 golfers, Shimkus hit an eagle on par 5 hole No. 12 to shoot an even par on the back nine.
  • Starting on No. 3, Kaya Kshatriya shot a four-over par in her first six holes but bounced back to drain a birdie on No. 9, followed by nine straight pars. Her 77 on the day has her tied for 11th place overall.
  • One stroke behind Kshatriya and in 16th place is Rachel Penzenstadler with a 78.  Penzenstadler started the morning with a birdie on her first hole of the day (No. 2) and added 11 pars to the round.
  • Bringing in the Mountain Lions scorers on Monday is Samantha Saile's 79 (tied-17th place).  Saile started the back nine with back-to-back birdies before making par on four of her last five holes.
  • In fifth place and just outside of scoring position is Olivia Florence who carded an 82 and is tied for 32nd overall.
  • Competing as individuals and in their first collegiate tournament for the Mountain Lions are Torri Leung and Eliana Vigil.  Leung owns an 81 and is tied for 24th place while Vigil is tied with Florence for 32nd place with an 82.
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • Host team CSU Pueblo is leading the 10-team tournament and has an eight-stroke lead over the Mountain Lions (299).  The ThunderWolves Zoey Rodriguez recorded a one-under par today to pace all individuals.
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • Saile tallied two of the Mountain Lions four birdies today.
  • Shimkus leads all golfers with 14 pars.
  • The Mountain Lions are ranked first in par 4 scoring (4.30), third in Par 5 scoring (5.24) and fourth in Par 4 scoring (3.44).
  • Today's 307 is the lowest round of the season by UCCS.
  • UCCS and CSUP are tied for the team lead in made pars with 54 each.
  • Kshatriya recorded her lowest round of the season today (77).
 
UP NEXT
  • Round two will begin Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
